[Member Intro] Am I the oldest beginner? HI from Melbourne!!

I will give it a go, i.e. going full colour neutral, before going one colour at a time, and share my experience later. Thanks. Yeah, I will be absolutely thrilled if I could one day get a sub 1-m solve. :D One thing at time, I am still trying to learn the Beginner level 4-look OLL/PLL. All these algorithms look daunting but this lockdown is helping me to be focussed. :D

You can definitely do it. 4LLL may seem like a decent number of algs, but of the OLL algs, only a few are harder to memorize, and for PLL many algs share similarities.

Thanks qwr for your advice, and, also for posting the Youtube video on the top cubers (as of June 7, 2021). Nice!
Also another general tip: try to explore different algs from speedcubedb.com. It's an excellent resource and much better than what I did back then which was using the speedsolving wiki which doesn't tell you which algs are actually good.

If you are enthusiastic about cubing, might I suggest starting a youtube channel? :D You have at least a few people on these forums to watch, like I do.

a lot of the 4lll steps can be split into different parts, for example J-Perm " R U R' F' R U R' U' R' F R2 U' R " when i first learned this algorithm, i split it into a couple
"R U R' F; " - "R U R' U' " - "R' F R2 U' R"
basically i split them so i can remember easier

(btw the J-Perm is used in 4lll)

Are you sure? The way I learned is first look is either headlights with A perm or no headlights which is Y perm. You need to have a diagonal corner swap alg, for which Y perm is the easiest to execute.
Yea, at least for me, J Perm is used to switch the UFR corner and the UBR Corner (a corner swap)

It's not a diagonal corner swap tho. You need something that will do that to solve corners in one step.
And it isnt, how i learned 4lll is oll (cross then corners) then the pll is do the corners first, if i get a diagonal corner swap i use a Y Perm, if i get an adjacent corner swap ill use a J Perm, and thats it

I started with the T-perm.
Its pretty much the same thing for 4lll kek
For me i learnt the J Perm for adjacent corner swaps and Y perm for Diagonal corner swaps

A friend of mine learnt the mirror of J Perm (forgot what its called)

Also, you can get under a minute using just the layer by layer method although you might have to learn some more algorithms(like 4 look last layer which is 16 algorithms in total)
To me, 4 look last layer is important, but I think that starting with intuitive F2L would be better. Use it in every solve once you learn it. Your times might get worse but it's worth it in the long run. It took me over 5 months for my times with F2L to be faster than my times with beginner first+second layer. However, after that, my solve times dropped by half.

Thanks, Megaminx lover. over 5 months with F2L to be faster than beginner method?! And more more work to half that time? So, it will probably take me a year to achieve my goal of solving it under 1m.

No like what I mean is that there are faster ways to improve your times (under 1 min with beginners is achievable) but If you are going to cube for the long run, start with F2L first.
