Hi! This is Dan and I am 75 and I live in Melbourne. I have just started 2 months ago, when I decided I should do something about one of my bucket list items, solving the Rubik's cube. I researched and discovered this amazing world of cubing that I never knew about, all the video, tutorials and material that cubers around the world have selflessly contributed, and, that the greatest cuber, Feliks, is actually right here in my city. WoW! I have small hands and I started with a YJ Zhilong, and have now got a RS3M 2020. Both are great, after lubing, although the latter seem a little big and clearly heavy for me, esp after I added extra magnets to it. I can now solve the cube consistently, using the most basic layer by layer method. I am sub 3 minutes. WoW! ;)

I just joined and wonder whether there are many others like me. I think it is a great hobby to keep our hands and minds active. I think it's much better than twiddling our thumbs while in the waiting room of the doctor, pathologist, ..., or while being locked down, as we are at this time. Anyway, I am here and I will be exploring these forums as I learn. Please be patient with this old newbie.

Quick question: I am ready to invest more and am looking for a smaller, lighter and really quiet cube. I realise the cube can be distracting to others around, especially for those who are also wearing hearing aids, which amplifies higher pitch sounds. I am looking at the Gan 354 V2, Tengyun M, and the new Tornado V2, which is said to be quiet as well. Which one seems the best, given that I already have in the other cubes? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! Many cubers have started during lockdown, so you're in good company.

For quiet cubes the Tengyun v1 M is unbeatable for its quietness and low pitch sound. The cube is light but not particularly small. It does get slightly louder and higher pitched if you are able to spam TPS.

Hey there, I'm also from Melbourne. There are plenty more new cubers who have picked up the hobby during lockdown. Some light and quiet cubes you may be interested in taking a look into include most of the recent GAN line of puzzles (although rather expensive), the new Tornado V2, and the Tengyun V2 M. Happy cubing :)

Welcome :D Im glad that people from any ages likes da cube (maybe you can teach your children and impress them :P)

For quiet cubes dayan tengyun m is magnificent although as someone said earlier, it gets loud if you spam it :v

3 minutes is impressive! and its a step towards any time you would want!
Good luck on your journey

I would be very happy if I could reach my next goal - to do it in 1 minute. That may take a long time though as I still using the most basic algorithms about 6 or at most 7 of them. Thanks for the encouragement. :)

hello there and welcome to the forums. I hope you have fun exploring more of speedcubing knowledge.

1 Minutes is absolutely doable with the beginner method :D a small tip that would help when you get the hang of it, skip the daisy :P straight to the white cross is much better

Welcome!! It's nice to see more people picking up cubing in these horrible times!! adding a bunch of heavy lube(like Traxxas 50k or something) is enough to quieten your cube but if you really want to get a quiet, new cube, the Tengyun is for you!!

Also, you can get under a minute using just the layer by layer method although you might have to learn some more algorithms(like 4 look last layer which is 16 algorithms in total)

Thanks for the tip. I will attempt the 4-Look Last Layer.

Thanks again. I can now skip the daisy and go straight to the white cross, but without matching the colours on the sides which I find slower for me to do than another method I just learned. I use Sune to line up the edges' colours with the centre pieces (hope I am describing it properly). Then I use the standard Beginner's method to fix the second layer and also to finish the solve. I have also learned to start with the Yellow cross, if the scramble is better with Yellow. Not colour neutral at all, but I'm fine with a White or Yellow cross. Yeah! Good fun and challenge. Giving myself a pat on the shoulder. :D

Welcome! I haven't seen many cubers with your age since many quit cubing by then, but you and everyone else are more than welcomed!

Also, can I ask what do you think can be your maximum turns per second (tps)? Learning fingertricks can help (there're plenty of tutorials on YouTube and Speedcubestats has animations), but sometimes having a slow and steady pace is better for begginers.

Its very impressive that you have taken the time to learn at an old age. My advice, if you want to get faster, would be to watch J perm's video on getting faster at 3x3 with the beginner method (Disclaimer. You may not use the method he is going over, if that is so, then don't proceed with the video). If your method has a Last Layer of :

Yellow cross, Corners in the right place, orient the corners, then watch the video. It will go over Mirrored algorithms, which is when algorithms are essentially the same but are done on the opposite side of the cube. This is to make sure that you don't have to repeat algorithms two or more times to do what you want to do with the pieces, and inverted algorithms, which serve for the same purpose

welcome to the forum!
have a nice time and good luck improving! :D

Thanks for the tip. I don't know what my TPS is or how to measure that. I have found JPERM's Finger Tricks video and going through that very slowly, while learning his video of Beginner OLL (beyond the absolute beginner's OLL method). :D

Thanks for your interest. Here's are stats from today, for what it is worth. :p
