Max Park wins 3x3s!

I believe this is also the first time Feliks never won any of the rounds at a competition in 3x3.

Max Park deserves this even though there was a timer reset ;(

Having a champion in my area is cool

I think it's awfully early to say that, especially considering his absolutely mind-shattering 5x5x5 performance this week!
True, but you can only help but wonder, when will Feliks start losing steam, when will the newer, younger, and possibly faster generation of cubers (such as Max Park), start to catch up with him. Although, rethinking it, this probably won't happen for a long time, but it is best to get ready for it. All legends fall out of sight eventually. (This is starting to sound like Cars 3)

I'm honestly a bit excited that Feliks didn't win. It was starting to look, especially after his big cube performances earlier in the week, that he was so completely in a class of his own that he might never be beaten until he just quits cubing. That's obviously not the case. I wouldn't be surprised if he laid off of 3x3 practice a bit around when he got the WR average in favor of some more concentrated big cube practice. Nonetheless, it's always a good thing when there is more parity in competition.

I'm starting to feel like the times are getting so low, and there's so much more competition, that it's a bit more of a toss up for who wins. An ao5 doesn't show the cuber's skill as much as it used to imo. I know there isn't a whole lot can be done as this conversation has happened before, but this is something people should definitely think about when wanting to know who the world champion is at an event .

As I mentioned in another thread, I would vote for two Ao12, on separate days, taking the better of the two. There is currently way too much luck involved...

Another option which is more spectator friendly is head-to-head best of 9. Like in the team competition, the two head-to-head cubers start at exactly the same time. Whoever finishes first wins that round, best of 9 wins. Extremely awesome for spectators. This would be classic tournament, double elimination format.

I really don't see a problem with luck being involved. Luck plays a major role in most sports (if it didn't, every game would have a guaranteed outcome), and although luck does play a significant role with records in cubing, it plays a minimal role in deciding winners of a competition. Winners are decided from the same scrambles, so whether the scrambles are easy or hard doesn't play a role in deciding competition winners. To be able to take advantage of easy starts is purely skill (in my opinion) and getting skips later in your solve depends on your solution, and not the scramble - and that's also a skill (in my opinion).

And for the small degree of luck that remains? That's what makes competitions worth following because the outcome is not already predetermined.
