As of late I've been noticing a lot of returning cubers making threads asking what they've missed in their months or years of absence from the cubing community. This thread allows all of those types of posts to be compiled in one place, and is for any and all people to ask questions about what's happened while they've been gone.

By the way, if a mod finds this thread too similar to this one, I don't mind if it's deleted. I feel like this does serve a different purpose though.

And, to anyone returning, welcome back! :)

I am not returning but am fairly new. I started cubing seriously about 8 months ago. Anyone able to provide a history of significant events up to then? Obviously the general knowledge like Erno Rubik and 1982 Worlds need not be included.

I've taken a long hiatus for the better part of this year due to being busy with school. But now that I've graduated, I've picked up cubing again recently. Could anyone give me a rundown of the currently best cubes/brands? I feel like I've missed a lot and my mains are still the good old Zhanchi for 2x2 and 3x3, as I got them way back when Dayan was having their heyday. My pyraminx and 4x4 are Shengshou, and they're alright for me because I'm not too serious with those events, but it'll still be interesting to know what's the best on the market at the moment.

Check out the "Cubing Generations" thread.
I've already seen that thread and it really only covers the major events everyone is familiar with. There's some stuff which is rarely mentioned on the forums, like recently I watched camcuber go through his old collection of speedcubes and he was talking about the Japanese speedcubing kit, Rubik's lube being the best at one point, and Alpha cubes.

MoYu, YuXin, and QiYi are probably the three biggest/most popular companies at this point. For 2x2, the original plastic DaYan is still widely considered the best, so you're alright there, but the ZhanChi is a bit outdated as far as 3x3s go. It's still usable, but most people agree that more recent cubes (such as the MoYu WeiLong GTS, QiYi Valk 3, and Gans 356 Air, as well as thecubicle's recent magnetic cubes) are generally the best on the market at this point. The best Pyraminx out there for most people is the new MoYu Magnetic pyraminx (not the original MoYu), and 4x4 is split between a few major cubes such as the MoYu AoSu and YuXin Blue.
