I was looking at the World Cube Association website, and was amazed to see that so many people have times under 20 seconds. I've only gotten a time under a minute twice, once 57 seconds, another 54 seconds, and usually I get around 1:15 - 1:30 as a solve time. What's the trick to a 20 second solve?

A more defined answer:

Sub 20 averages require much dexterity, patience, and turning accuracy. The fastest way to get sub 20 averages is to learn a good speedcubing method, practice that, learn algorithms by heart, and develop finger tricks. That way, you can solve a cube using very few turns and very fast TPS (turn per seconds).

Some speedcubing methods:
Fridrich (highly recomended)
Petrus(also recomended)
Roux
Waterman
Heise

Google them to find some good websites on the methods. Good luck. Searching the forum helps too.

I thought it was impossible for me, but that is not true, If you have less talent like me , it takes dedication and stop saying -I can not do this- . I got below 20 sec the moment I decided that every body can do 20 sec or less . If you have the talent it takes only a few months. But it took me 3 years, no I can do a 17.5 sec average at home all the time.....My next goal is 16.xx . Is this possible , yes If I optimize the cross phase and perform PLL from all directions -so no U, U2 turns are needed-

Ton
btw I do not turn that fast -3 moves a second - Lookahead is the what makes me fast and of coarse a method that require around 50 moves

Um, lawl. There are certainly many more things than that you could work on, and nearly any of them would yeild a better result than that. That might be something to consider around like 12 or so....:D

The best method is studying every possible configuration on a rubik's cube and then learning the optimal solution to all of them. It'll just take about 20 million years.

byu, a lot of questions you're asking here can be answered by reading a lot of the material already available online or discussions already posted here. We're not here to spoonfeed you basic information.

Honestly, "what's the trick"? That's exactly what non-cubers say to us, as if there were a single secret technique or move sequence that makes you solve quickly every time.

When I started cubing, there wasn't the wealth of information on speedcubing on the internet like there is today. Now it's everywhere, there are active forum communities, websites galore, YouTube video tutorials for people who don't like to read, and people still ask things like "What's the best method?" Kids these days...

I agree with Shelley -- Instead of asking that question, you should be watching tutorial videos for help on how to become a speedcuber...

I always averaged 1:15.09 (always that number, too) until a few weeks back when I first started watching badmephisto's introduction to Fridrich 2look oll/plls (4LLL)...

After that, I haven't got a time over 1:00.00 .

In fact, I average 49.00 seconds now (5 weeks later) because of him.

What's the secret?

Watch YouTube videos.
Practice.
Never give up.

You have to love it to be good at it.
If you're doing it to impress your friends, don't bother -- when I tried that, I just got slower and slower (the pressure does get to you).

Solve it for the love of the cube and the love of the cube alone.

Roflmao.
You're my hero.
