Hello everyone. I'm new here.

anyway, so recently I've been able to solve the Rubik's cube easily. I did in first one way, and then found out that one step took a ton of time(you had to repeat in like 20 times hoping that at one point it would come out right).

I had already wanted to be able to solve it faster, and I heard about badmephisto's(spelling?) YouTube video on how to do PLL and OLL or whatever. So I saw his other videos, and now I did his beginner method. I heard him say before trying to go on to a more advanced method, I should try to get it all done in about a minute.

Turns out it takes me a minute just to get one side solved. How can I speed this up? I've been trying so much.

(Btw my average for the whole thing is about 2:30)

Thanks guys.

1. solve layers not sides (just in-case you didn't know :p)

2. practise Turn per second using you algs. Try getting ambidextrous in cubing.

3. look for other pieces while you are doing one. You should know what that alg is so perform it while looking for other pieces.

Those 3 tips will easily get you sub 1 minute with Layer by Layer :)

That sounds good. Thanks.

Also, I know you solve by layers, but you go like this: You get the cross, then you add the corners to the cross, and eventually after you add the corners, you get one side. But at that point I'm already just about at one minute.

Since the first layer doesn't require many moves, I'm guessing most of your time is wasted looking for pieces. This comes with practice, but work on spotting the pieces you're looking for faster. Do you solve the same color every time? This can cut down your recognition time if you train yourself to always spot the same color.

Before you begin a solve in competition, you have up to 15 seconds pre-inspection time. Use the time wisely, locate all four pieces for your cross and plan how to put them in place. This should save you some time. You don't have to limit yourself to 15 seconds just yet; take as long as you want to start, and as you get more experienced you can reduce your pre-inspection time.

Another possibility is your cube is very stiff and you're spending a lot of time just turning and aligning everything. If your cube is just horrible, the Hardware forum has tips on how to lube your cube and discussions of where to get decent cubes. As a beginner you don't need to go the DIY cube route just yet, but a normal storebought Rubik's brand cube should serve your purposes well enough.

P.S. this thread belongs in the Beginner forum.

When you do your corner insertions do you find the spot the corner should be in, position the correct corner directly above that, and do something like R U R' U' over and over until the corner corrects itself? If you do, you should try and learn to insert them like the following:

scramble: R U R' U'

insert corner by doing U R U' R' (how you should insert corners not just reversing a scramble)
