I think (maybe) many of us are not giving the 356 a fair chance.
After towel-cleaned the cubies (clearing off the 30K oil from the surfaces of the cubies, I spent lots of time breaking it in. It became fast and "loose" - a much better cube than before. Y
Recently, I used 10K silicone oil on the cubies and 50K oil on the white corner stalks. In fact I lubed it 3 times in the span of 2 days, simply to test the effect of lube on the gans. I popped an edge and a corner from one surface, then -
The first 2 times: lube 2 corner surface and its 2 white stalks. Once worked in, and dried, it remained fast but it felt "lubed"
The 3rd time: lube all 4 corner surfaces and the 2 white stalks (where I popped the edge/corner). It took longer for the effect of the lube (gummy?) to "disappear". Once it did, it is just as fast but with 2 differences:
a. the cube felt tighter (as if I tightened the tension)
b. the cube recovered its gans "turning feel" (the first time I turned the 356, I was impressed, though it wasn't really fast)
IMO the 356 can become a much better cube by:
1. 2~3 weeks of breaking it in
2. 50K silicone oil on the white corner stalks (me thinks gans overlubes the cube when it sells it, thus accounting for the initial slickness)
[doubt it will surpass Hualong, with Hualong's amazing ability to turn smoothly without any apparent (real or otherwise) catching]
