[WR] Feliks Zemdegs 3x3 OH single 6.88

It's almost impossible to unintentionally mis-scramble a square-1 because if you get one move wrong, the rest of the scramble stops making sense. For the disqualified sq1 single, the scrambler probably made a mistake halfway through scrambling, and just said "screw it", and thus left the competitor with a easy scramble.

This doesn't happen with 3x3. The scrambler probably did one wrong move, but still did a full 25 move scramble.

True fact: 50% of why I don't do square-1 is because I usually get about 1/4 through a computer scramble and find that I've screwed it up. (the other 50% is I don't feel like learning the parity alg, but that's a different matter :P)

Why not? It works in Finland
Just because it works somewhere in the world doesn't mean that it will work every where in the world. Just like in Finland you could play many sports that require snow and ice, but in Australia that is not an option currently. And what I was trying to say is that at that competition there was clearly a lack of competent scramblers, so trying to force more when there won't be a different result is useless.

This can be compared to solving the cube in the competition. What if everyone would stop competing because they might get +2's or DNF's? We compete with the risk of getting these penalties if the rules aren't followed, scrambling shouldn't be any different from that
Your comparison has a major flaw in it, scramblers really have no incentive to scramble, whereas competitors have the incentive to get faster and get better times. Sure scramblers may want to scramble to help out the community, which is great, but if all of sudden they start to get penalized for messing up a scramble, I am sure many of them will turn away from scrambling. Especially if these penalties mean they can get disqualified from competitions. However I do fully believe that if it was intentional they shall be severely punished.

If you aren't satisfied with the system, you probably shouldn't be there at all. Especially if you refuse to help where needed.
I do not ever remember saying that is was dissatisfied with the current systems, and nor do I remember refusing to help.

It was up so that Brest/others could reconstruct and determine the reason for the misscramble (And report to the WCA board) but I won't upload it until a decision is made either way.
Why wouldn't you upload it though? Since the WCA Board would have already seen it and (I assume) there is nothing conspicuous about the solve itself, just the scramble. I don't see how it could cause any harm.

Because the people who see it on speedsolving are a very small fraction of the people who will see it. Listing it as WR would be misleading and saying it isn't would be confusing. It'd just upset a huge portion of the cubing community if it were retracted.

Such a feat! I can't see this being beaten for a long time. Congratulations Feliks (even if it doesn't get approved).

This is insane! Very impressive!
(too bad the whole thing is a bit soiled by an incompetent scrambler tho)

I don't think its fair to blame the scrambler to be honest. Mistakes happen, and it should be up to the WCA to adjust their regulations so individual scrambler-mistakes do not get passed on as an approved scramble. A quality check from a different scrambler should be obligatory. These things would seldom happen if this quality check is made.

It's not really fair to blame it on him, judging on what's been said so far.

Also worth pointing out if the scrambler had not messed it up (assuming he did), this probably wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Who else but the scrambler should be blamed for a badly executed, unchecked scramble?

And that's exactly how he soiled the whole situation. I think Faz is by far the best cuber out there right now. But regarding this record, some people will keep saying "well, the reason why he got it was because the scrambler messed up the scramble, otherwise it wouldn't have happened in the first place".

I think that's entering in the grounds of causality, he could have done it worse, yes, but he could also get a LL skip on the correct scramble and do a 5 something instead. Feliks has been unlucky there was a miss scramble, not lucky or unlucky because how the scramble was, we can't now that for sure.

Scrambling errors happen it was just bad luck it happened in a WR solve, I want to emphasize again that the only fact is that the scramble was different, it may or may not have been lucky, also bear in mind that maybe a few comps ago a missscramble could have happened to Feliks and gone unnoticed because it was not WR, which he, or any other for that matter, could have done on the right scramble.

Leave causality and ifs alone, is it legit? WR, is it not? DNF

It was neither necessarily badly executed (he may have done one U' instead of a U) nor unchecked (iirc there has been talk that he was under pressure to do the scrambles quickly, and maybe the two sides he checked did indeed look similar at first glance)

You combined the two by saying what you did in #151, so that applies only to you, not me.

I think that Feliks should definitely get the WR for his solve on the grounds that the scramble can probably be considered just as random as the one he should have gotten (I'm sure that's being looked into).

I reiterate that I think Feliks is currently the best cuber out there. With him it's just a matter of time before he runs into a scramble that he'll be able to break a WR with. Precisely because of that, scramblers should be extra careful when handing out cubes for him to solve, which this particular scrambler clearly was not (and if that's the amount of attention paid to Feliks's cube, imagine how little he cares for scrambles that go to less known cubers).

I would consider doing a U' instead of a U as bad execution.

nor unchecked (iirc there has been talk that he was under pressure to do the scrambles quickly, and maybe the two sides he checked did indeed look similar at first glance)
Ok, maybe not unchecked, just badly checked then.

Again, I think Faz should get the WR, and I don't think that any penalty should be applied to the scrambler. But we should at least acknowledge the fact that the scrambler did his job very poorly. This whole "mistakes happen" attitude and pretending that he properly scrambled and checked the cube when he didn't will only cement the idea miss-scrambling on a competition is no big deal.

If you do one move wrong a scramble can look very similar to correct. If this is what happened it's hard to complain, maybe I'm also a bad scrambler, but I don't check every single sticker.
