I learned the ZZ method when I was averaging about 2:00 and didn't even know CFOP, so I can tell you that it is possible. EO is a tricky concept to get your head around, especially if you have not developed much of an instinct for how the pieces move on the cube. I figured it out on a 15 hour plane flight. I learned to recognise bad edges, and then I sat and tried just solving EO (don't bother with the line) about 100 times, and then checked that I had no bad edges. You will make a lot of mistakes, but when you do, try to figure out why the edge you thought should flip didn't flip. The only two tutorials I ever looked at were the two that Lazy Einstein linked above.
Also important to note: In ZZ you have block building, which is no easier than intuitive F2L. Don't be afraid of solving intuitively. It will come naturally if you just sit and figure it out.
