Zagros' Progression (all WCA events)

Results are up on WCA. I'm top 3k 7x7 single and mean, top 2k 3bld single, top 1000 3bld mean, 4bld single, and multi, and top 500 5bld single (WR 422). 5bld and multi are both top 100 in USA, so I'm on the rankings page now. Only nine solves at this comp, total 9 comps and 305 solves. PR streak 9 comps, 3486 days. New stats are 3bld mean, 4bld single, 5bld single, multi single. Only missing FMC and 6x6 mean. I have gotten 87 total PRs, so average 3.51 solves per PR. I competed in 5 rounds at this comp, and have competed in 73 total rounds. I average 4.18 solves per round and 1.19 PRs per round. If you were to count multiple PRs in one round, I would have three extra, one from 7x7, and two from 3bld, as I got faster every solve in my 3bld mean, starting with a PR.

I am planning on a comp in January and one in February, but I won't talk about them too much until I'm actually registered.

I'm all registered for two comps on Jan 13 and Feb 3. Both actually in my state for once! (Or for twice I guess). I'll go over my goals for both in order. However, I will probably update my goals for the Febraury comp after the January one.

Comp 1: KCKC 4 Big and Awkward 2024 (Jan 13)
Events: 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7, Megaminx, Square-1

4x4: There are two rounds, top 12 go to final. Right now the cutoff for 12th ranked is 57.85, but competitor limit is not nearly reached. My PR is 54.60. I can beat that super easily, I should aim for at least sub-50. Something fun is that I am actually learning OPA! I had so much fun learning 7-simul, and this is kinda similar with trying to do something hard during inspection, so I think it will be fun. So far I can do it in 23-25s so I need to be about twice as fast, but I have plenty of time to practice.

5x5: My PR is 1:43.34. I can also easily beat this, and my main goal should be to sub-1:40 in order to qualify for NAC. Today I got a sub1:40 ao12 and a 1:36 ao5 so I think in a month's time I should easily be able to accomplish this.

6x6: My last 6x6 comp was in 2014 and I got only a single and no average. So, I need to get an average. But really, I need to sub-3:00 to qualify for NAC. This is also attainable. I got a 2:56 mean today.

7x7: There are two rounds, top 8 go to final. Cutoff for top 8 is 6:13 rn. My PR is 4:18.90, and that was so recently my main goal is just to beat it. However, it is sub-4:00 to qualify for NAC. I don't know if this is attainable by then, but it just might be. I mean, a month ago I wasn't sub-5, but look at the PR. So with another month to practice, I just might be able to do it.

Square-1: There are two rounds, top 8 for to final. Cutoff for top 8 is 34.24 rn. My PR is 26.89. My only time goal right now is to sub-25 to qualify for NAC. I want to make sure I finish learning an efficient solution to all cubeshapes, even the hard ones by then. And also that I learn some more EPs and maybe some parity/parity EPs. I am certain I can quickly improve at this event just by spending time practicing, so I suspect you will see a little better than just sub-25 from me. But we'll see.

Megaminx: This is the main event. There are three rounds, second round is free and third round is top 8. The cutoff for top 8 rn is 1:20. My PR is 1:16.22. This is a very good PR for me, much better than my normal at-home average, so I don't expect to drop it by a ton, my only goal is really to beat it. Of course I will finally learn the 5-corner CP algs. I definitely still have room to improve from some practice though, so I think I will definitely be able to PR, but maybe not by a ton.

Comp 2: CoMO Cubing Winter 2024 (Feb 3)
Events: 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 3BLD, Megaminx, Skewb

2x2: My current pr is 3.53, which was a very good performance for me. I only have one round, and it's a luck event, so I don't want to stake my hopes on anything crazy. I'll just hope for a PR. However, I have just began learning EG-1, which I have been really excited to learn for a while, but had to put off since I had a BLD comp to practice for. With EG-1 I should be able to fully one-look. Hopefully I will get fast enough that I could beat my 3.53 PR even with bad scrambles.

3x3: There are three rounds, second round is free and final is top 12. The cutoff for 12th place rn is 12.50. My PR is currently 13.11, after unfortunately failing to sub-13 at my last 3x3 comp. I also did not have 3x3 at my last comp, and the January comp will also not have 3x3, so it will have been month since last competing in it. So by then, hopefully sub-13 will be in the bag. Fingers crossed. Other than that, I guess I also want to make finals.

4x4: Two rounds, top 8 in finals. I am currently the 8th seed. I have this event two comps in a row, so I'm gonna come off the first comp and go straight back into grinding again. I have high expectations here. I expect to have mastered OPA by this time, I don't normally practice an event for 2 months straight, so I hope I will impress myself.

3BLD: There are two rounds, and I'm currently the top person registered. After my awesome performance last weekend, the only place I can really go from here is sub-1. Unfortunately, I really struggle. Other than my PB, I have no other sub-1s. I get many low 1:0X, but it's just so tough to go faster. But this time, I have two months to prepare, so it's finally time to learn 3-style! I have done a lot of FMC and I have also successfully solved bld with (very slow) intuitive 3-style, so I think it shouldn't be super hard to pick up, but it's still a big undertaking. I'm gonna take it very casual and try to finish corners before the January comp, then I'll decide from there if I think I have time to also learn edges. But just corners should be enough to sub-1 for sure. I also am currently trying to learn how to fully audio the cube. Or rather fully short-term, with a similar strategy that isn't quite all audio, but just as fast. I can definitely handle the amount of memo, the problem is if you do this you really ought to ECEC or CECE instead of the CEEC I'm used to. I'll have to play around.

Megaminx: Two rounds, top 8 to finals, 8th seed is 1:29. Same as 4x4, I have this two comps in a row. As I said before the January comp I don't have huge goals, and I'll probably focus more on nxn. But I'm gonna try to pop off at this comp. Mega is such a practice-based event, I think I can accomplish something good with this long to practice it.

Skewb: LOL. I don't want to learn NS and my PR is so good and lucky (5.76) I would be shocked if I beat it. But I'll be casually practicing, maybe my turning will somehow get crazy by then. There are two rounds, 8th seed is 6.53 and I do think I can do at least that good.

Long post lol. In the meantime I'm practicing stuff for the Jan comp as well as getting started on EG-1 and 3-style. I actually have got a lot of PBs but I won't update them right now because of how long this is already, hopefully I'll get even more and share them all in a few days.

Short update to say I registered for NAC! Already asked off work, I will be booking a flight which is exciting cuz I've only flown once years ago as a kid with my family, this will be my first time solo. Only in for 9 events (registered for 10 but I'm not near the multibld cutoff of top 20) but I can qualify for a few more before then.

I don't have tons of progress because I have been busy and went on a trip and etc. But I am popping off crazy on 5x5 and will probably be sub-1:30 before too long, I reviewed everything on sq1 and mega and am back to my old times (I hadn't practiced since my early November comp), and so far I have all the 3-style for top face corners down (A, B, C targets). I hope as I go on each set gets easier to learn because of being similar and increasingly more intuitive. I also punctuate my practice of brute force learning by doing full intuitive 3-style solves (use the algs I learned when they come up, otherwise find something intuitive). I got a sub-3 minutes 3bld solve with full 3style corners doing this, which is something I guess lol

My next comp in 11 days.

I got the qiyi clock for xmas, finally free of rubik's brand. This is the one case where I can resoundingly say that I had a hardware issue, not a skill issue. Literally two seconds dropped instantly. I've only done 120 solves with it and I have 5.79 single, 6.71 mo3, 6.83 ao5, 7.14 ao12, 7.37 ao25, 7.63 ao50, 8.14 ao100. My best single ever before was 7.19. And conveniently, right after getting this my comp announced they are adding a round of clock! So excited I can improve my PR so much. Hopefully this time I can have no 7simul fails, I am much quicker at inspection now. And I get to compete with new pin regs, so that's fun.

I'm not using opa at the comp. I'm still practicing but it's very difficult and I can't do it fast enough yet. I will eventually.

I have the MGC 5x5 and 7x7 now, and a bunch of other puzzles coming soon. Most of my puzzles not updated since 2019, so really excited. I didn't practice much recently because of my job and because of holidays. But I think I will in the comings days since my comp is so soon now, and since I have new puzzles to motivate me and will be getting more soon. Hopefully I will post new PBs on nxn and mega and sq1 before the comp.

I am busy because of my job and can't practice as long as I want to. And I don't always want to get up early on a Saturday morning to drive for hours. So, I skipped the first competition. Then before the second one, I was able to practice for the week leading up to it. Here is my results from COMO Cubing Winter 2024 today:

2x2 PR single = 2.64
3x3 PR single = 10.11, average = 12.53
4x4 PR single = 44.51, average = 50.36
Megaminx PR single = 1:08.66, average = 1:10.96 (average = overall pb by over 3 seconds)
3x3 BLD = First Place (no PR)

The 3x3 single is very quick. And I don't know how this keeps happening with megaminx, I thought I couldn't beat my old PR of 1:16. I am excited to get a solve below 1:20 at home. And really, I'm not into megaminx like that. Idk why I keep getting better, I just reluctantly do a few solves each day when it's in an upcoming comp but somehow it's always one of the events I do best at. I was washed at blind but I got a single 1:12 in the first round due to a good scramble where edge memo was 7 letters.

I need to get better at 3x3 and 2x2 so I will just try to practice them for a little bit. There will be another competition in mid March if I can register for it.

I have created my 30-day 3x3 bootcamp. I will practice every day and see how much I can improve. At the end, I think I will make a YouTube video with details about my strategy and how I'm practicing. Anyway, each day I am doing an average of 50, with a competition simulation for the last five solves. I am tracking these times. I have completed the first three days, the latest ao50 = 12.45.

I think I only have time to practice two events at once. I have been working on 2x2 as well, I am getting improvements with my CLL, it's just really taken a long time to sink in. But I'm finally confident with mid-3 with CLL, I even got a 3.10 ao25 the other day. I think I need to cycle through events to practice so I keep my skill on all, so I am packing up the 2x2 and switching to Pyraminx for the next few days.

Also I randomly got a 5x5 pb, I forget exactly but it's 1:29 (my second sub 1:30 but faster than the last one a little bit) and my 4x4 pb of 40.75

There are two comps I want to go to next month on consecutive weekends.

Concordia Turning Spring 2024, Mar 16
This is in my own city, so it will be my first no-travel comp!
Events are 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, Pyraminx, Skewb

Going Fast in Grandview 2024, Mar 23
Events are 2x2, 3x3, 5x5, OH, Skewb, Clock
I am excited for 5x5 and OH as I have not competed in these events in years. I am also excited for clock as my PR average is 12 seconds but I can get sub 8 now.

Additionally, I am registered for Great Lakes championship, but that's a long time away. It will be my first chance to compete in FMC though! Great Lakes is not my region. However, this comp is much closer to me than my region's championship (why on earth is KENTUCKY in the Great Lakes region???)

I finished the first seven days of my 30 day 3x3 challenge. I have got so much improvement already! Very happy, because I was stuck on 3x3 for so long. I have these new records: ao5 = 10.27 [9.49, (9.47), (12.82), 10.19, 11.14], ao12 = 11.39, ao25 = 11.77, ao50 = 11.81, ao100 = 12.03, ao200 = 12.27. I have been doing ao50 each day, and on day seven finally it is sub-12! That was kinda my goal by the end of the thirty days, but I guess I'll just have to get even faster. Out of the 350 solves, this is the breakdown:

8 seconds - 3 solves
9 seconds - 14 solves
10 seconds - 31 solves
11 seconds - 78 solves
12 seconds - 113 solves
13 seconds - 67 solves
14 seconds - 31 solves
15 seconds - 8 solves
16 seconds - 4 solves
17 seconds - 1 solve

anyway, I am very encouraged that I can get confident in sub-12 before long, and hopefully start getting a lot more sub-10 solves.

I also got my Pyraminx ao12 record like three times, the newest one is 3.79 seconds. And, I got my new PB 2x2 single of 0.75 seconds! I was very excited because I always choke good 2x2 scrambles. This is an improvement from 0.92. The scramble is F U R F R U' R' U' R'.
