I think the retooled version refers to the version with edge pieces locking with the center pieces:

Interesting. I haven't seen this design before. This would be a re-retooled version, however. The original Rubik's does not have those big holes in the core like the previous picture showed.

So to recap;

Original: Has none of those big holes in the core.
Retooled: The first picture in this thread.
Re-retooled(I guess?): Last picture in this thread.

Either way, OP, you should just get a mefferts/QJ. They will be far cheaper than buying an old rubik's and much easier to get.

Mefferts.com sell tiled 4x4's for $16 including shipping. It has the same mech, and almost identical in every way to a Rubik's, except it's actually good. Or you could get a normal sized QJ (cloned on the Rubik's model) or mini qj, which is just a mini version. Why do you need it? Mefferts and QJ are basically clones.

Yeah, I was consider buying a mini QJ or a Mefferts, but I heard that the Old Rubik's 4x4 were the best, and I wanted try it out.

Where'd you hear that? It's definitely not the best. It's one of the worst. Yes, it is better than the re-tooled version, but it's no where near as good as mefferts, qj or mini qj.

If this is for general speedsolving, I've tried all three above, and I average the fastest with a mini qj. I've also tried the re-tooled 4x4, and it's horrible.

The WR was set with a mini QJ. Need any more convincing?

Perhaps it would have been set with an old rubik's if they weren't all worn out since they are no longer produced?

He is trying, maybe he do have QJs/Mefferts?

Erik Akkersdijk said that the Old Rubik's 4x4 was better than Meffert's. (In an old review so his opinon may be different now).

The 2x2 WR was set with ES. Does that mean it is better than Maru or LanLan?
