I cringe every time I see another gimmicky solve video. I think it's totally cool that people like to do one-handed pushups (no offense, Mike) or solve it underwater, or juggle while they solve. I can dunk a basketball, but here's why I'm not going to make a video combining a solve with a dunk: it takes away from the art of the solve. Since when did a simple solve on its own no longer become good enough?

Occasionally people see me doing a totally sweet ninja solve and say something like, "oh, but can you do it while juggling." Really?! Who cares? I tell them I'm not into gimmicky solves. It doesn't actually mean they are actually better at solving it: they just combined two things! Where does it stop... playing the piano with your feet while solving one-handed and writing peotry with the other hand? Maybe people just do it for attention. Whatever the reasons I don't really care... just please stop the madness!

It really doesn't seem like it.

In what way does it 'take away from the art of the solve'?! Are you implying that cubing is some high artform and anything more than a show of dexterity and pattern recognition?

Combining two activities shows that someone is adept at doing both displays of skill at once. Cubing is a skill, other things are a skill, cubing and other things are a skill.

Since when did a simple solve on its own no longer become good enough?.

Since never. Just because people make videos of them doing two things at once, does not mean cubing alone is not 'good enough'. Your assertion is completely wrong.

Shortly after this you complain about people vying for attention. It's ok though, keep telling us how cool you are.

and say something like, "oh, but can you do it while juggling." Really?! Who cares? I tell them I'm not into gimmicky solves.

So you're not into it. Great. No need to tell us. This is something other people enjoy, and there is no valid reason at all for you to complain about it.

It doesn't actually mean they are actually better at solving it: they just combined two things!

That's the entire point. They're showing their multitasking skills, not trying to make them look better at cubing.

Where does it stop... playing the piano with your feet while solving one-handed and writing peotry with the other hand?

Why should you care? Why should it bother you? Why is it such a bad thing? That sounds hard to do and I'm sure people would be impressed by it. You give no real reason to not do so if you can.

Maybe people just do it for attention.

And what of it if they do?

Whatever the reasons I don't really care... just please stop the madness!

Please stop trying to stop people having fun.

I can dunk a basketball

WOAH

You mad OP? You just jelly because you can't dunk a basketball whilst solving a cube. Lol you couldn't even get close.

I don't understand what the problem is... You think that it takes away from the "art" of the solve, but clearly when people make those videos, they're not trying to show off their solving ability, they're trying to show off their other skill. If you're not impressed, so what? It's all just for fun.

I'd also like to point out that the title of this thread is a complete lie. At no point did you say why they were a bad idea. You just said why you didn't like them.

When someone asks you "oh, but can you do it while juggling", why not just ask something like "would you ask a tennis pro or guitar player if they can do it while juggling?"

I think a lot of people who ask questions like that don't realize how dumb the questions sound.

BLD IS A GIMMICK
BAN IT

EDIT: To contribute something a bit more useful, I think people mostly do it for the attention. I'm not saying that's a bad thing though. Nobody likes to admit that they are attention seekers, but 99.9% of us probably are.

I disagree. I think SOME people do it for attention but others do it just for fun and they want to share something interesting that may amuse others or give pleasure to others or just want to share something they did that they thought was cool. Attention doesn't have to be the objective at all even if it does happen. I don't know exactly what percentage of the cubing population do things for attention, but I'm pretty sure it's not 99.9%.

It gives you any interesting video every so often.

Just normal solve videos aren't that interesting someone doing juggling and a solve at once show their multitasking skills

AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM DON"T WATCH THEM

99.9% of the people who make gimmicky solve video's...

If you don't do it for the attention why record it and put it on the interweb?

Can it be any type of poetry?

ROFL

Seriously though. You consider cubing in its purest form an art. And others that do "gimmicky" solves call what they do an art. Don't hate on other people's art. It's fun for them.

Not everyone likes cubing. Reading this is kind of like hearing a speedstacker calling for everyone to stop speedsolving because it takes away from the art of speedstacking. Ridiculous.
