Why cubes aren't a waste of money

Cubing is a waste of money. Just not a big one compared to other hobbies.
If you're happy wasting your money on that hobby, then who cares what you do.

If you're speedcubing just to look cool, then you should reconsider your career.
What the hell does my career have anything to do with speedcubing?
Are you saying that a chemical engineer should quit his job and take another career path, because they speedcube to look cool?!

In my opinion, cubing is a waste. Speedcubing is not.

If you're cubing just to look cool, then you should reconsider your motives. If you're speedcubing just to look cool, then you should reconsider your career.

why? those reasons for cubeing/speedcubeing are just as legit as any other. possibly even more honest depending on the circumstances, as im sure thats how most people got into the hobby (a friend could do it, or i saw a video and it looked cool, etc...). but whatever, everybodys own way of doing something is apparently the correct way.

my parents say '' don't worry about the money whe just want you to be happy'' and i think if/when i will get kids i will want the same thing.
so i would suppose it isn't becuase it make me happy.

I personally havent been a speedcuber but i dont know why do people buy 50+ 3x3's just to know what is the best. Also one of the things what bothers me is the reviews for these 3x3's, its like "yeah its good right out of the box" and "ill be using this for the tournament" without any solid explanation. And YES I KNOW that is a very bold and mostly incorrect statement, but they still exist and they arent too rare to find either.

My main point is that I personally find collecting different kinds of puzzles to me more intriguing than finding out what the best speedcube is.

Perhaps I worded stuff wrong, by career, I meant SPEEDCUBING career. Sorry about the confusion that may have caused.

In my opinion, speedcubing isn't JUST for looking cool; it's also for having fun (among other reasons). If you ONLY want to look cool, then what's the point? It's a huge waste of time. One does not simply cube just to be popular.

collecting cubes is a waste of money and plastic, especially if you're just using the cubes to unbox them and never use them afterwards like some youtubers do nowadays.

So let's talk about my next clarinet shall we ? I could get a little piano for the same price ....

Every purchase of entertainment (games, films etc) has a cost per hour. A new game for a new-gen console costs about £40, and even if it's an epic like Dragon Age, will only net you about 50 hours playtime probably. Hence your cost/hr = £0.80, and that's very generous. Some titles will only give you 12 hours and can cost £60.

My first cube lasted me around 1500 hours, and cost me £8. Cost/hr = £0.005p.

It's one of the most cost-efficient hobbies around, and I've been bought countless drinks over bets or purely out of respect, so I'm probably breaking even.

Competing can be expensive though.

Traveling is horrible for money :(((

Anything that doesn't bring you food, shelter and health could be considered a waste. But for a hobby, cubing is very good value. You can get hundreds of hours of fun for the price of a couple of drinks.

why? its a bit presumptuous for you to tell others why they should be cubing. in fact, i probably would have quit this long ago if it wernt for the good friends ive made through the activity.

if if the only point is to look cool, the point is to look cool.... the question answered it's self, man.

Not a waste of money because for $15 or less you can buy a 3x3 cube that has over 43 quintillion possibilities for you to find solutions to. Try any other hobby where that is possible!

I'm not giving any orders to anyone... I'm just stating my opinions. If you don't like them, that's fine -- but I think you're misunderstanding me. If I come across as "presumptuous," then sorry. But I'm not pushing anybody around (or trying to).

You can't really come up with a valid reason why cubing isn't a waste of money. It's a subjective comment. You might think it's not a water of money but one of your parent will say it is. Remember speedcubing is only a hobby.

i know (well, i assumed optimistically), im trying to indirectly tell/teach you to write your opinions less objectively. if it is an opinion, express it as such.
and the way that you use the word "you" is certainly indicative of someone giving orders... so ya

Minecraft: Over 1000 Hours.
Pokemon: 200 Hrs.

Anyway, I think it is only a waste if you do not think it is valuable - Pokemon cards are only a piece of paper to some (like me), while they are like gold to others.

Oh of course, how much you value it is everything. There's some forms of entertainment even relatively poor people will pay £250 an hour for. Hehe.

What justifies buying a bunch of cubes for me is that one order is on average about $30, where as my mother spends $200 or more each week on groceries for my whole family. The difference though is that cubes are a want not a need. We need food to live but not cubes.
