Right now I'm using a poorly lubricated store bought cube. It turns smooth, but not fast. I noticed that the cubes that speed cubers use have a white cubies instead of black. Is there a specific brand or type of Rubik's cube that's better for speed cubing?

Popbuying if you're cheap like me.

And try the one answer one question thread or the search function ;)

Study the cubes first. Find which type of cube you would prefer. I spent months researching my A5 until I finally decided to get one. It's my main speedcube now.

actually color does matter... especially with F-II's they are really different

i have a white what's the black like?

I don't know what he's talking about. I've tried both and I didn't notice a difference. Maybe one of them had the older core in it.

I have both a black and white F-II. The white one is ~1 month older (supposedly ) both with the same core (or at least the same color). The white one is faster and smoother than the black one. The black one has more of the bubbly feel to it though. I prefer my white F-II.
