When to move on from 3x3 to 4x4

Don't worry about getting a Weisu by accident. I used to have one, and while there are better cubes now it's by no means a bad one.

As far as method, redux is simplest: just solve centers, pair up edges, solve f2/3l, fix parities, solve LL. Most people switch pretty quickly to Yau or Hoya, which are redux with some steps reordered. I personally recommend Yau. There are other methods, but in terms of popularity and viability as a speedsolving method I would compare Yau to CFOP, Hoya to ZZ, and redux to Roux. That's not saying the methods are similar, they're just similar in how popular and practical they are. Yau and Hoya have similar ergonomic restrictions, which work fine on 4x4 but become increasingly difficult on bigger cubes. Consequently most people use redux on 6x6 and 7x7, and I think most use redux on 5x5 as well. I recently switched from Yau to redux for 5x5.
I just switched to Yau on a 5x5 and it's alot easier solve. I am stillusing redux on 6x6 and up

Yau is easy, the question is where the line is between easy centers and easy first 3/4 edges. I got to around 3:15 using Yau on 5x5, switching to redux got me to about 3:00ish. My fingers and eyes aren't that fast, I suspect my 5x5 limit is around 2:00, I think redux gives me my best chance to get there.

My friend got one like a week after he learned the 3x3. I personally think you should go for it, it is a very fun event ;)
