What's with newbie cubers lately?

I think I should join Lofty and work on Petrus. It would be really good with MGLS. Or maybe something like a combination of 2x2x2 block, then extend to 2x2x3, then do the third slot like Fridrich, then MGLS, then PLL.

I've been practicing petrus lately. I would really like to try that. Seems interesting. which requires less moves, ZB or MGLS? Probably ZB, but better by how much on average?

What do you mean? ZB and MGLS aren't really comparable. ZB has 2 parts to it, last slot and last layer. MGLS only has last slot and OLL. You still have to permute after MGLS.

Hae dene whats this new petrus thing going around? also I love the OH Idea. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO TELL EVERYONE, I AM MAKING A NEW ACCOUNT CALLED "LukeMayn" SO IF YOU SEE THAT NAME, I AM NOT A NOOB!!!

You know, you could have gotten PJK to change your account name instead of making a new one.

Lofty, I still don't think they're comparable. MGLS is separate from PLL, you can't really add PLL to it just to compare it to ZB, that wouldn't be fair. Now if Lucas were to find algs that would orient and permute all the edges, then orient and permute all the corners, it would be more comparable. In fact, possibly even less cases than ZB. Someone (Lucas) should try checking that out, or has it already been done?

MGLS is ELS+CLS, primarily CLS. Thing is, though PLL is not part of MGLS, CLS necessitates it. :p

Anyhow, you're talking of around 5!*2^4/2+5!*3^4/(2*4)=1695 cases.

Dene, I heard about your method on the thread in Speedsolving titled Petrus v. Fridrich. I, after reading your comment here, tried it when I realised that, if when slotting the F2L slot, you disrupt the 2xx2x3, bad edges will reappear. Or do you just skip the bad edge/good edge part? Having only good edges would certainly reduce the number of cases for OLL/last corner thingy. (I'm not that good with notation in MGLS.

Back just two years ago, we weren't able to get as much help as you guys do now. Don't complain!

That's pretty much my point right there xD If we can do it back then, there's no reason why you can't do it now, with all the help these days hehe.

Seriously, why does everything have to be spoon-fed to people?
F2l is my favorite part of cubing, I would HATE to look up an algorithm for it!
Plus, if you come up with your own algorithms for F2l, they usually fit your cubing style better.
For last layer your pretty much stuck with algorithms, but thats OK, learn them, invent your own finger tricks, and be happy :)

But sometimes you just need to goto a competition and ask for help from a more advanced cuber(with the exception of Harris, who will just tell you to Stop using so many 'F' moves and tell you to practice xD ), I bet they are willing to show you an optimal algorithm that is taking you forever to preform, or help you overall with your solve.

You really can't help someone over the internet, its pretty hard.

To sum it up:
Goto a competition and ask for advice from cubers that are > you.

Hehe, that's because you just showed me your F2L solve and asked me to comment, you didn't ask me for a particular case XD

Well, I've started to use more helpful rotations instead of the F moves, and I guess that helped me achieve and sustain this awesome sub-20.

Plus working on one particular case isn't exactly helpful, I needed to see you solve it slowly explaining what you are doing, and all of those cool little F2l tricks, now that is what really helps my F2l.

I don't do the good/bad edge part, or at least not yet.

If you find a way to do the good/bad edge part and preserve that during the F2L slot, wouldn't that greatly reduce the number of cases you have to memorise to complete the OLL + last corner insert because there would already be a cross? I did my first reasonable timed (read: < 5 min) Petrus solve today w/ Fridrich last layer!

Also, I might make a F2L video. I think I have some interesting concepts.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I think you're referring to something that Lofty told me about, in that I could just skip ELS, which is something I may look into.

Yes, if all edges are always good, then ELS would be reduced to simply putting the non-top layer edge into the right place.

yea I learned the newbie method then like a week later I learned about the different methods like fridrich and chose that and practiced like you can't believe and since December 07 I have got sub 18 average

I am still a newbie who cubing around 4 months ago. I am still average sub-1 min 25 secs. Still learning the pjk's method

I solve the cube in a week after I know the purpose of rubik's cube (make all side the same colour, If you teach people how to solve the cube you will know what I meant). Actually, I also cheated a bit, I looked the booklet how to solve it.

Most experts that I asked said, "looking ahead", "practice", "lube the cube"

And I go to sub-2 min to sub-1 min 25 secs.

So, what do you mean by understanding the cube?

I wish I had started on Fridrich earlier, I'm currently using intuitive F2L and beginner LL and I average around 25 secs.

I'm just now starting to learn PLLs and OLLs. My last layer is killing me, I can average around 13-14 seconds for F2L, which means my last layer takes 11-12 seconds, not good.

If I had started learning the algs earlier, I'd be allot faster now. So for all the newbs out there, go ahead and start learning as much as you can comprehend, it'll get you further in the long run, at least it would of for me.
