Hello fellow cubers!

I've been cubing for a couple of months now and am just about sub-40. I'm using CFOP 4LLL (I know PLL but am not very good with it as my recognition is distinctly meh and I need to relearn some mirrored algs). However, I am very interested in the potential of other methods and puzzle theory (I know Roux, ZZ, Petrus, Heise, NMP, 8355 etc, though I am very poor with all of them). I'll be heading back to university in a week (I study chemistry) so I won't have as much time to practice unfortunately.

If there are any other cubers in York, UK or the surrounding area give me a shout as I would love to meet some fellow UK cubers. While cubing is quite a solitary pastime, I'd love to share my newfound passion with others.

Edit: I forgot to talk about my puzzles! I have a Rubik's brand 40th aniversary cube which sparked my interest. I also have a Qiyi Thunderclap v1 (my main), a Valk 3, and a Moyu Weipo (all stickerless). I have a GAN 356 Air SM in the mail and am interested in expanding my collection to include a pyraminx, skewb and square-1. Higher order cubes are less interesting to me, but I am considering picking up a 4x4 as well.

cool I think you should switch to roux cause it has more potentional than all of them but if you hate m moves then go with zz or stay with cfop

Welcome! :)

I'd say give 4x4 a go, it's actually quite fun, unlike any other bigger cubes. I'm not very close to York unfortunately, but there are usually at least 2-3 comps in the north each year, so take a look at the UKCA website from time to time to see if any have been announced.

That's not true really. CFOP and ZZ has about as much potential as any other methods. Hell you can be sub-30 with beginners. It just your style of solving over another

no,you can be sub 4.5 with roux and zz but with cfop its almost impossible to be sub 5 and with begginers you cant get sub 9

You can be lots faster then sub 30. I have a friends who uses LBL, doesn't even know 2Look OLL, 6,7 PLLs including 2Look PLL. His PB AO100 it 18.7, and his AO1000 is 19.x. He also has a few sub 11's

Just to be clear when it comes to things like being fast with beginner's, there comes a point where the time you put into learning another method and getting fast with it will yield much better results.

So you *could* be sub-15 with beginners but with that amount of effort you could also be sub-8 wit roux/CFOP/ZZ etc.

By far the best way to get involved in cubing is to compete. Subscribe on the UKCA site (not the cheerleader one) to be notified of any competitions coming up. There is still space at the UK Championships in Stevenage at the end of October and Weston at the end of November but they might be a trek for you.
As for method I'd recommend doing whichever you enjoy the most.

Woo, another UK cuber! Welcome to the forums :)
I'm from Newcastle, so not quite nearby York but the same sort of neck of the woods. Enjoy a distinct lack of competitions up here, unless you like long pilgrimages right down south...
Agreed with what TDM said above, you've got to get yourself a 4x4. 5x5x5+ are like optional because it's just the same puzzle but more tedious, but 4x4's great (apart from OLL parity, that can screw off.)
Also, liking the Conway's game of life avatar!
