What would make a competition go more smoothly, be more enjoyable, or just be better? Please understand that this thread and its replies are not meant to offend organizers or delegates, who clearly put lots of hard work into organizing competitions. I am just wondering what else people would want to see at a competition.

EDIT: Ok, what about things that the organization team can do to make it better? (ie. get a deal for food with a nearby restaurant)

I think the answer will be to make them more time efficient, and I think you'll get answers that amount to that said in many different ways. People want as many events as possible, and it's always tough to organize.

Making a thread like this implies that there's a significant flaw in competitions now, and significant room for improvement. What did you have in mind?

If more people volunteered to help it would make competitions a lot better. (This is actually not an issue at all in Australia at the moment, thank goodness).

I don't believe that there is a significant flaw or anything, quite the opposite in fact. The thing is that I may be helping with organizing a competition soon (possibly) and I'm thinking about what I can do to make it better for everyone.

The time efficiency is definitely something to consider, but I wonder how that would work - competitions don't really waste any time as far as I can see.

This. I understand that people can get tired of judging all day(trust me). But that wouldn't be a problem if we had more people helping out.

One thing that I would like to see is more credit to first time competitors. It can be really scary and nerve-wracking to get up and do solves for the first time. I've seen prizes for fastest first timer before, and I've always liked that idea.

We've done that in some Texas competitions. Youngest Competitor and Fastest Newcomer.

Something that can work is providing a seating space (lolnats)

But on topic, getting a local franchise to sponsor by helping provide food and beverages, more volunteers (Can the delegate please just pick people and actually enforce a rule if they don't volunteer? I don't see this happen most of the time), and venue rules actually being followed.

I wish people would stay in one place near the competitor's stations when called up. I hate having to call people's names across venues when I judge.

Sometimes I wish I could be as manly as Bob.

I really like the idea about recognizing new competitors, because it really can be scary to go the first time (the word "competition" makes it seem like we're all going to try to beat each other). I wonder what we can do to attract more first-timers in general.

As for franchises sponsoring competitions, I think that would be really cool, but why would a franchise want to do that? Since they aren't marketing to a very large audience (unless it was worlds or nats), I don't know how you would convince anyone to do that.
