Using chess squares as memory palace

Yes sorry about the bump, I felt this topic still needed to be discussed more, after all the development in MBLD in the last 3.5 years.

It was worth a revisit.
I don’t see it being very fair to chastise others for bumping relevant threads instead is making repeats if you’re also going to bump years old threads.

I think bumping threads is over-chastised, and you will rarely see me complain about it. I believe bumping threads is a very good thing to do if there is additional valid information being added. This is the advantage of a Forum over other communication methods (reddit, discord, etc) - information from the distant past can suddenly become relevant again, and the history of the past is immediately available. We as moderators should be very judicious about complaining about bumped threads.

If someone bumps a thread to say something silly like "I agree", that's not a good bump, and it's valid to criticize it. But if someone is adding worthwhile information, we should never chastise those bumps - being able to do bumps like that is one of the very nicest features of a Forum.

If a moderator criticizes a bump, it should always be done with a justification showing that there was no real information added by bumping it, and that it is not a topic that has suddenly become relevant again due to some important related event.

I completely agree; I believe @OreKehStrah may have been pointing out the hypocrisy of how @abunickabhi criticizes bumps, while he himself bumps more threads than almost anyone (often uselessly!)

I agree and realize that is what it was about. abunickabhi is a new moderator; I'm hoping to educate him. :-) I believe he is generally doing quite well in his new role, but has a few things he could learn (such as this). Since this is his thread, I'm hoping it won't bother him to hijack it for a little bit for some possible correction.

Dark squares and light squares are not uniformly placed in my packs, I just have to get used to it I guess.

I am curious. Since you are really apparently using a chessboard for this, how do you mentally give context to each square? Do you imagine some chess position to go with each square? Or perhaps imagine the pieces that it attacks or that attack it? I assume it would be important to have some context for the images to hang on for it to be useful.

Also curious what your mental contexts are for the countries. Examples of a memorization at a location would be helpful.

Mental context for chess,
For the first and last rows I use the starting position pieces to give a mental context, so first row is white heavy pieces and last row is black heavy pieces.

For the rest of the squares, each square is a story, for example d5 is a typical knight output square in Sicilian,
b5 is benko break,
a6 gives me ruy lopez or najdorf context,
f5 is Latvian or Schielmann Gambit square for me
And so on.

Mental context for countries,
I have visited 11 countries so I have strong memories for them. Other than that each country I have some strong idea about its roads, cities, food, culture because of playing a lot of geoguessr and seeing a lot of geography now videos.

Okay so I am crushing a lot in my memo with chess squares memory palace.

I have to revisit the feasibility of this palace even though I thought it would work at first since I am a decent chess player who has spent a lot of time with 64 squares.
