Hello there to everybody at speedsolving.com! I am new to this site and to the world of speedcubing. Right now, I am using a rubik's brand cube, with my best time being around 48 seconds (with a little vaseline in it) using a sort of F2L for the first two layers and a beginners method for the last layer. (Right now I am working on PLL) I want to get a new speedcube, but I am not sure whether I should upgrade straight to something like a Dayan Zhanchi, or if I should do it progressively and upgrade to a slightly better cube every once in a while, eventually getting to the zhanchi. Any opinions? If you chose the latter, what cubes to you recommend I get? Where is the cheapest place to get them at, as well?Also, should I just use silicon spray for my lube or should I use a commercial product?

I used a storebought for a while (about 1 month and a half, starting last october), then bought an F-II. I love the bubbly feeling of it, but it kept poping, which I hated. Last week, I got a ZhanChi. I love it, it doesn't pop, but it's really fast, which is sometimes kind of annoying. I average sub-55.

I lube it with Traxxas. (You can search on the forums, there are a bunch of threads about it.) I paid less than 10$ for it, including shipping to Canada. It would have been the same price to get silicon spray from Wal-mart. (I know CRC is a really cheap silicon spray, but it's not sold in this my province.)

And I got mine at CubeDepot USA, the prices are low and the shipping aswell. I'm a happy customer :D

Personally I would not suggest a Zhachi in general. I would suggest a Linyun because they lock up less, they don't pop and are the fastest.

For lube you can get some shock oil for $6 at any hobby store.

@Sahid

I find it to be too locky.

No, neither of my Linyuns pop. I have a Lubix Linyun and self modded one that does not pop and is used for OH. The key to getting them to not pop but still by good is having them somewhat tight and being lubed with a little bit of maru lube. As for my turning style, I turn somewhat rough because of my high TPS but I have adapted my cubes to not pop from my speed.

Before I got a speedcube, I was pretty much in the exact same situation as you (storebought, best around 50 secs)
but then i got a dayan zhanchi
and now my times are almost always sub 40 (a month later)
so thats what happened to me
and btw the zhanchi is awesome especially compared to a storebought
but as a noob dont listen only to me

I agree. You need to make the LingYun pretty tight. To compensate for the higher tensions, you need to keep the cube well lubed at all times though. That way, its full corner cutting capabilities stay intact and it shouldn't pop. The result is a cube that is fast and locks less than any other cube that I have tried (I own 30+ 3x3x3s and tend to think I have enough material for my own personal comparisons).

EDIT

The V-I is still available, but you could also get a V-II and remove the torps if the cube is too locky (as mine was).

Yeah, a week or so after I got that time, I took my cube apart and cleaned out most of the vaseline. When I put it back together, I didn't feel any difference.
