I don't think they would've allowed it. IIRC they required brand new rubik's brand cubes?I have a Rubik's brand that I painstakingly modded to turn like a decent speedcube (or at least what was decent in 2015 or so). It even gets corner twists sometimes.
I badly wish I could have taken that to the first 1980s cubing competition. People weren't even using finger tricks yet. I would have destroyed it.
