This forum needs new mods

lotsa stuff

Seems to me like someone is targeting you, and very unfairly I must say. I've had run-ins with mods occasionally, but I think they get sick of me arguing back (and because I'm super smart and rational I usually come out on top), and then just give up trying to infract me and just delete my posts.

btw you only get contacted about a post getting deleted if you get an infraction.

In saying all that, you probably notice it a lot because it seems you have a knack for posting a lot (almost 800 in a few months, gee wizz). I was a spammer once upon a time, in the good old days when it wasn't moderated.

If you think this forum is over-policed, you're an idiot. I've seen forums much worse than this. The mods were lenient, so the trolls came in. It's that the mods are strict here which makes the forum good.

The point of this site is to discuss cubing related things, not immaturely poke at people, call them names, put them down etc etc. This is the kind of things I see getting deleted. If you want to create a speed solving site where it's ok to be a complete A&%-hat to each other you're more than welcome to do so, but I doubt you would get a whole lot of activity. There are select people that act childish, and that's why only select posts get deleted. If you are not here to start problems with anybody then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I'm inclined to think you were acting inappropriately, or breaking the rules in one form or another and your post was then deleted and now you're acting out because of it. If not, then you worry about things you don't need to worry about.

Well said. There's a reason the mods want the discussions to stay on topic. This forum is supposed to be a resource. How much harder would it be to find information if half the posts were dumb jokes or pointless attacks? I don't want to read through page after page of off-topic discussion just in the hopes that I can find something worthwhile.

@Deedubb:

I honestly have no problem with the removal of any of your posts. #1 was hostile. #2 contributed nothing. #4 should have prompted a report- no reason to post when the mods could have taken care of it.

I'll address #3 because it was in response to my original post. I actually read your post in the feet thread before it was deleted. I intentionally didn't respond because your comment struck me as rude and I didn't want to get dragged into that sort of discussion. Maybe you had an argument, but there are ways to write your thoughts down without trying to incite anger.

This is the kind of post that's always deleted. Anything that is commenting about the comments themselves is deemed off topic and warranting deletion. This is a perfect example of the kind of post that just adds a fun tone to things. It doesn't hurt anyone or really derail things. Sure it's not on topic, but why delete something that just adds a lighthearted tone to things?

Actually I have to agree with your sentiment. I used to read the forums so much, but perhaps a contributing factor to me reading almost nothing nowadays is that the fun has been taking out of it. That speedcubin thread is a perfect example; it would never be allowed now.

Reading this SERIOUSLY upsets me. CAN A MOD PLEASE CONFIRM?! this is word for word my original PM to the mod "I'm sorry I truly don't understand what was wrong with my post. Can you explain what a video macro is? I have read through all the site rules and don't see a mention of anything I have done wrong. I hope that this has not lead to an infraction point because I absolutely meant no harm or offense. Thanks
-Sk8erman41"

I got absolutely zero response to the infraction element (and would be curious if I did indeed get a infraction point).

Whatever happened I can accept it, but my point (and others I believe) is this..... there needs to be more transparency as to what happened and why when a thread/post is deleted and the exact reasons for doing so

The intention wasn't to incite anger, it was to point out (perhaps in a snarky way) a very inherent flaw in your argument. Perhaps I could have chosen my counter a bit more wisely, but sometimes I think it's important to show someone why what they're saying doesn't make any sense. It's happened to me often where I've created a hypothetical situation and someone points out that it just doesn't apply practically. I thought only someone completely lacking in rational thinking skills would be turned off of the entire cubing community because of one event that they are not forced to watch or participate in.

I guess it all boils down to the community that is trying to be created here. I think you can't have a forum dedicated only to providing information on speedcubing and a forum intended to create a friendly/fun environment for posting. One has to be prioritized, and I think it's clear in the rules that the information is the priority here. If that's the goal, then it's fine. It's just not the most fun place to be a part of.

The only point in using snark is to incite anger.

And here's a tip: If you want to point out how an argument makes no sense, the best way is to ask questions. Asking questions makes the other person flesh out the logic behind the argument, giving you opportunities to poke holes in it. There's also always the possibility that you just misunderstood the point, (or maybe it wasn't presented well to begin with). If you had asked and presented your point, then maybe I would have responded with my thought process, and then your post would probably still be there.

#1 was a fact and is actually stated pretty passively. Hostile would be: "Rami, stop posting in this thread now because you are young and stupid and are not thinking before you post." (btw Rami I am not actually saying this, just making an example)

#2 did no harm, either. Do you want every post that doesn't directly contribute something to be deleted? If that post deserved to be deleted, a huge number of posts on this forum deserve to be deleted.

If a post like #3 actually incites anger in someone, that person gets a little too emotionally involved in simple discussion and needs to stop taking personal offense at stuff. (I respect your decision not to get involved; I am just saying a reaction of anger is excessive) That kind of sensitivity is directly related to a decreased ability to think clearly (and contribute effectively). In any case, at least that post was making a point. If we add this kind of post (a post that makes a point but does so in a sarcastic manner) to the list of stuff to be deleted just like #2 (posts that don't contribute something but also do no harm), that's a pretty enormous number of posts that would have to be deleted from the forum.

can't tell if troll towards post or troll towards name
These are the kinds of post that should be warranted for deletion. Thanks for the example.
My goal wasn't to debate, despite what my name and posts may imply, I hate arguing. I was only saying something that I felt needed to be said, and no one else was doing it. I really don't care if it was justified or not.
What were you expecting by posting this on an open thread?

I don't post much, but I go through the forums quite often. I think that the mods do a fine job. Saying that, everyone is human and these mods aren't bots. They will overlook posts that derail the topic of a thread, but we all have to deal with it. Not everyone can be completely objective in what they do, so cut them some slack. If you don't like it, please say so in a constructive manner with evidence to back you up, and not a blunt statement with the post saying, "title". Also, let's be honest. This forum is loads better than many other forums on the Internet.

But not debate? So you wanted constructive discussion, without views opposing yours? If you express an opinion, there will inevitably be debate. At least you started a discussion, though.

He starts a discussion, and then other people debate about it, and he watches with interest and possibly posts something if he feels the need to (or not if he doesn't). He doesn't need to debate endlessly himself; that's the wonderful thing about a public forum.

I personally didn't want to be a part of the discussion, I wanted to start a discussion about something I believe needs to be addressed. I don't care if anyone's views oppose mine, I wouldn't care if everyone in the thread was opposing me. It makes no difference, I'm just a spectator. I supplied my side of the argument in the beginning of the thread and that's all I intended on doing.

edit: lol someone ninja'd my own opinion :p

I really wish some people were here a long time ago to see how bad it really was. I'm not gonna lie, I post a metric crap ton of useless things now but it was much more back then. The ban hammer was dropped so many times without deletion or warning. It's only been recently (in my view) that the infraction system has been placed. You actually get a nice warning from speedsolving saying, you're breaking the rules, you might want to post carefully next time.

We have reasonable rules. We have plenty of decent people in charge now. If you truly think that the current mods are mad with power or that they abuse their power, then I feel bad for you because if say...certain mods came back to see that the forum is degrading again, the results won't be so pretty.

PS - Not directed at a specific person.
tl;dr - you don't know abuse of power.

This only happens for infractions though, not all deleted posts. If mods want to insist on continuing to delete stuff at the same rate they currently do, then I'd ask that notifications and reasons are given for all deleted posts. Actually I ask that this starts happening regardless. If someone's post is deleted with no trace, they will be left confused for one reason or another. If the deletion happens quickly, the user might think they just failed to post in the first place and will then make the same post over again. Or if the person does realize that their post was deleted, they are left not knowing why, and also not knowing which mod deleted it. Their only way to find anything out would be to PM a random mod and ask them to find out who deleted their post, so they can then actually ask that person for an explanation. The suggestion earlier in the thread about having deleted posts replaced with a "Deleted because ___" would be wonderful.

Its been a while since I have replied to a post recently, but I feel your frustration and others in this thread. I am active on other forums (cars, and biking,) and people handle them selves very well on those forums. This being do to the older age and maturity of the members. I would like to say the majority of members active in this forum are in their young teens, and that is no problem. When they interact with others, what they think they have said is taken usually taken as sarcasm or insults, this being due to no emotion or character over the internet. People react back to that, and usually people (I have done the same many times, that I regret greatly,) think they overreact due to the lack of tone of seriousness or humor. To get back on track, moderators have to "censor" this forum a little more due to the young age of its members. I think they do a great job closing/deleting posts to stop the arguing or useless bickering between members. Try and re-read your post over and think back to yourself if you would really say what you have written to that person face to face, I bet you will change what you have written. I say this because what you have typed may have been taken really wrong, or as an insult, which is not what you wanted to get across.
Fun Thread
