These forums are degrading

I'm considering making my own Forum, I've made one before, so that's a start. It'll be something of a SS Junior. Where cubers can let loose a bit more than they are officially allowed to here (but are doing anyway ;)). There will be rules of course, but more lenient than the official rules and the etiquette on this site.

There was another site just like this (besides masterthecube) a while back called Cubers Uncensored. Let's just call it a train wreck.

What about lurkers? When they decide to post, for the most part, they have a legitimate question or comment, but they also generally have a low post count.

I love you. No homo

IMO, karma and reputation and other similar forum functions are kind of meaningless. On most other forums, nearly everyone has insane amounts of positive reputation, even if they're not really good posters at all. Plus you have the issues of people begging for reputation, people ganging together to rep each other, people revenge-negging each other, etc...

Is this not exactly what I said about clan wars? Why was my comment dismissed so quickly? Because I have no avatar and only 16 posts?

uhmmm... Let's disregard the amount of posts people have made, that's just silly. I thought of the 100 post minimum for a lil bit but there is something better!

What if new threads could be posted differently? Like, they're submitted for peer review by a Mod. BEFORE they are posted. This will at least help reduce the newbie nubness.

Here's an example:

A. Kewber wants to start a new thread titled "What's the best 3x3?"... he/she submits the thread...
B. A mod looks at the thread (before it's accepted to post). Instead of letting it pass he/she denies the new thread and informs Kewber why it was denied. Along with that the mod redirects Kewber to a similar thread that will have meaningful answers for Kewber.
C. Kewber is probably happy that he/she got the right (or decent) answer instead being embarrassed or ridiculed by others on SS.

Something like this might be a fairly easy task for Mods. Since there aren't that many new threads per day/week or w/e. On the other hand, changing the site like this might be a big task for PJK. Even slight improvements in certain areas takes a heavy amount of effort to implement. Trololol

Does anyone else like this idea?

Approving threads should be easy...

In this forum I notice that many people's posts get ignored and restated. I think that instead of karma, post count, and wca id's,
the rules simply need to be enforced(and revised).

Do you guys actually think a 12 year old, foreigner, or even the average person is going to spend time following &reading all those rules?

I'm sure its common sense to obey the rules, but even laws are broken.

But I'm sure I've broken the rules before, and I bet some of you old people have also.

Noobs are meant to exist :p

So just show them question thread. But I hope some of you realize that the whole question forum(others) would be a graveyard.

We don't need more boarder control, but more quality threads(good things).. or enforce like communism.

Does this apply to everyone, or just new members?
> Everyone - Why should everyone have to go through this? There are many members who do post legitimate threads, and they shouldn't have to get their threads accepted.
> New Members - How does one go from "new member" to, well, not a "new member"? What should the guidelines be?

Good posts get ignored because people are too busy dealing with (or just flaming) bad-quality, useless, and repetitive posts. Reduce the bad posts, and you have a happier environment, and someone might even learn something.

To be fair it would have to be everyone. I can imagine right now if someone gets denied their thread approval and getting pissed off about it... well... that's when the thread should be reviewed a 2nd time by someone else.

As with almost every fact of life there are pros and cons to everything. It will not be perfect but possibly better, right? It might be accepted by a majority of current users for a system like I have mentioned... maybe. I could start a new thread right now to make a poll if people would like it or not, but I don't want to be that nub that starts another poll thread.

this is a very selective community, I feel quite sorry for new members making a thread and then immediately being degraded. I think new members should automatically be sent a message introducing the one answer question thread etc

Jon White: I'm sorry if you felt like I ignored your post- I was referring to something slightly different from you, I think. I don't see "clans" per se, but I see groups of people with similar opinions (sometimes valid, sometimes not) repping each other constantly. This was also one of a couple points that I made.

When you talked about "clan wars", I envisioned opposition between large groups of people and ongoing hostility. Tell me if you think I'm wrong, but I think we were talking about similar but different phenomenons.

And yeah, I guess it could be taken away if it's ineffective. I was just commenting on how I've seen it work out on other forums.

New people don't want to be bothered by messages in the beginning, they want to jump right in and get involved with the community. Often not knowing our habits of telling people to Google or gtfo. Lol I like that phrase.

@izovire

Sounds like a good idea. You'd need to ask the mods if they're up for the extra work though.

Okay, so my "let's start a new forum!" idea is obsolete considering the previous attempts. But still...I might just do it for the sake of it, success or not.

At the end of the day, I'm proud to be an active member of SpeedSolving. I like the people here, I love the conversations and I feel at home here. I respect every single member, despite being twice the age of some of you. I treat 12 year olds as equals and as adults on this forum, which is something I don't do in everyday life. The tone and vibe here in general is of a very high standard considering the average age.

Izovire's idea would certainly help cut down the frustrations of some of you quite a bit. I get tired of reading the same thread titles over and over too to be honest. The OP is right in suggesting better moderation, but that moderation should mainly benefit the general mood here on SS, which in my opinion is already a very unique one in forum land.

I may want to change my sig to "I thought thrice before submitting this post"...

Here's an idea: (by the way, this is a joke!)
Have everyone here make their sig something like "Go here to ask questions instead of making a new thread!". New members will probably (at least, I would hope so) notice it if everyone has that as their sig...
