I would like to first start off by stating that I am sure this has been covered before and I hate having to ask this in a new thread. I used the search function and tried different search strings 3-4 times and went through numerous pages of results to try to avoid this so I apologize for posting this in advance.

I always assumed, based on other peoples averages here on the forum, that a proper 3x3x3 average was 12 solves, with best solve and worst solve removed, to end with a 10 solve average.

I was reading up on the WCA regulations page and saw different information for what I thought I already knew.

Rubik's Cube 'Best of x', 'Average of 5' 'Average of 5'

This was taken directly off of the WCA regulations page, for me to say "I am sub xx" do I have to do an average of 3/5 as per the WCA regulations, or do I continue doing a 10/12 solve average as I am doing now?

I again apologize for creating this thread.

i think most people agree that a real average is 10/12. However, for time reasons, WCA competitions are 3/5.

Why are you worrying about what you are able to call yourself? Neither of those averages will say very much about how good you are if you only do them one time. I've always had a problem with people saying "I am sub xx" for the most part, at least how they mostly mean it. I've had several sub-16 averages of 12, but I wouldn't consider myself to be sub-16 because most of my averages are not sub-16. If you really want to label yourself, don't say you are "sub xx" until you feel confident that you can take any average of 12 and have it be "sub xx". Until then, maybe you could say "I can (or I have) averaged sub xx".
