The Closed Thread Discussion Thread

I say if I mod closes a thread, edits a post, merges posts, and all that stuff, they should initial it or put their name so we know who did it. Not to blame the mods but I know that having to put your name on something makes people more accountable for the things they say or do. I see a lot of stupid posts online in blogs, comments sections, etc. If they had to put their name then I be fewer people would be so bold to say the things they do.

I agree

Threads are usually closed or moved WITH RESONABLE JUSTIFICATION

for example, the 4.41 thread was beginning to deteriorate, it's clear that there is no direct evidence of the solve and the matter is now in the hands of the WCA, when a judgement has been made, that would be a good time to re-open discussion. People in that thread were just starting to rage at this guy and it was starting to get out of hand.

I actually prefer it to how is was a while ago, all the efforts such as removing offtopic threads actually make it worse for more people imo. Closing threads because an individual thinks this should be done isn't particularly fair. However overall quality is getting worse and perhaps this is the only way things can be regulated. Not to mention most the time discussions just go round and round in circles at increasing speed. Though this makes people happier, and it's great fun to go round in circles, it is also not particularly productive, and this is why mods close the threads.

I have been involved in several forums, and was a mod for several years. In all honesty Allthough it may no feel like it, the most successful forums are the most strictly moderated. Locking threads may seem like a 'easy' option for a mod, but trust me, if you give the Internet free reign, with no moderation, they just burn them selves out and soon everyone stops posting altogether. Where was that thread going? Nowhere at all. Yes I agree mods sometimes may lock things and delete things prematurely sometimes, but if they didn't do it at all you would be complaining more, and you would only miss them when they were gone. So stop *****ing like tittle *****es and let the mods do their job. if you don't like moderation then try a different site. (I may sound hypocritical, but that's because I am)

It's clear that the mods do a difficult and under-appreciated job, but I for one am glad that the 4.41 thread was reopened.
It's the biggest story in speedcubing right now, and people rightly expect to be able to discuss it.
It's a lot more interesting than a bunch of threads with people talking about Fangshis they haven't even received yet

Maybe because it belongs to be in those one answer threads.

Well, it's my understanding that the OAQT is supposed to be for "one answer" type questions. If "the answer" to a question is clearly a matter of opinion, then clearly such a question is not a "one answer" type question, for example. I tend to agree with speedcuber50 and think that at least some moderators have forgotten what that thread is for and merge other types of questions into that thread that don't belong there.

The general purpose of threads is to allow separate discussions to be separate from each other. It seems as if moderators may have a mindset to merge almost anything to a superthread which tends to result in such threads getting muddled with several discussions going on all intermingled, making it harder to follow a particular discussion.

As for closing threads, I know some forums have a voting system rather than simply having it be based on the decision of one person. I don't know if that's necessarily what should be done here, but it seems like moderators are often performing actions on their own without any consensus with other moderators as to the most appropriate action to take.

Oh god this is annoying, and then no one answers your questions because those threads are dead.
I usually get one or two answers, but they're usually too short. Then everyone acts like I've got an answer and shuts up, so I never actually get a decent answer!

Honestly, your questions aren't deserving of their own thread. A simple search would provide way more information than any single thread would have, and would make it clear that these are questions that are asked on a regular basis.

Sometimes threads get closed by accident. Most of the time they're closed on purpose for a reason. If you think a thread got closed by accident, or you think a thread shouldn't have been closed, just tell us.

I suppose this thread would be a good place to discuss the closure of threads. There's no need to close it for those who were wondering. :p

I just hit the ! button and ask for the thread to be reopened. 9 times out of 10 it gets reopened :)
The Fasttech thread in the Hardware Area subforum you kept asking about was closed because there were complaint from other stores who paid for their threads in the Shops subforum. It'll remain closed.

When we edit or merge other people's posts, there's a hyperlink "Last edited by ___". You can click on it to see the changes made. Letting others know which one of us closed our thread would be easy, we just have to post "Thread closed." as the last post. I know some mods used to do this a few years ago, it'd be a nice habit to get into again. I'll start doing that.
