I think objectively, 3x3 is the best event, though I do agree that it is a bit overrated. This whole cubing community would not have happened without it. To my knowledge, the only WCA puzzles that were invented without the intention of being a variant of the Rubik's cube are the 2x2 and pyraminx, they were made before it. (And debatably clock, the sources I found relating to its origin do not give me enough details as to whether or not the clock was made based off 3x3. Clock was made after 3x3.) All three of those events would not have been popular if it was not for the Rubiks Cube. The inventor of Pyraminx himself said, "had it not been for Ernő Rubik's invention of the cube, my Pyraminx would have never been produced." Clock was only popular because Rubiks bought the patent from the inventors, and the puzzle was under his name.

3x3 is objectively the best event, as it is the most known to non-cubers, and it is the puzzle that started it all.

I agree that it's overrated.
Just because it was first though, I don't think it's necessarily the best puzzle.

To people who say 3x3 is objectively the best event: you either don't understand what the word objectively means, or you don't realise that the word 'best' is the superlative of 'good', and the things that make an event 'good' can vary from person to person. For example, if someone thinks the absence of algs makes an event good, they are likely to think clock is the best event. There is no objective definition of what makes an event good, and thus there is no objectively best event.

For me, it's a toss up between 3x3, 3BLD and MBLD. If it was possible on this poll, I would vote MBLD, as the luck factor is basically annihilated in this event, and it looks insanely impressive at a high level. So do 3x3 and 3BLD, but because 3BLD looks more impressive in my opinion, I vote 3BLD to be the best event. If only I could do well at it in competition...😂

I would vote for mbld if it was up there. Even though I'm relatively new to it (my pb is 5/8), there is no feeling like taking off the blindfold and seeing all of these solved cubes sitting in front of you. It’s the best high that I’ve ever felt. And it’s very relaxing and fun
