Tell us about you first ever competition

Off Topic: My parents won't allow me to got a competiton until I'm 18. 4 more years to go...

That's unfortunate. Is there a reason why? I'm lucky enough to have supportive parents who don't mind me taking off for a weekend. During the summer they're letting a friend and I drive across the country to US Nationals.

I'm 14 and my mom is HOPING that Saskatchewan gets a comp that I can go to :D...

Ask Canadain Cubing.
Yeah I will be doing that soon :D..

This may sound weird, but they are afraid of kidapping.

I don't blame you, a lot of parents are overprotective of their children, and won't let them do anything that they may think may not be safe. For example, my friends go airsofting in the woods right next to my house that has been marked safe by the community, but my parents won't let me go even near it, saying that there might be snakes (there aren't!), but yeah. You should try convincing them that it is totally safe.

The 2009 UK Open was my first competition and the only one I've attended so far. I had been cubing for five months (having received a cube for Fathers' Day) and I had been trying to speed up for a couple of months. I was adamant that I would take part regardless of how low in the rankings I would undoubtedly end up! I was enthused by the friendly welcome in this wonderful forum and determined to achieve a few reasonable personal goals.

(I started rambling here and then edited heavily :) )

The event was great and I met some very friendly, very cool people, most notably RVB who, although very busy with competing, scrambling and judging, found time to watch some of my solves and provide most welcome advice. I wanted to help out more but my scrambling skills were insufficient at the time. I competed in 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 and posted reasonable times... by my own low standards :D

Having travelled a significant distance to the event, I decided to I met up with some friends there who live in the North of England and was able to introduce them the cubing world in the most favourable possible environment!

I'd better shut up now :)

My first competition was amazing! It happened recently, if you want to see the results check my WCA profile... but it went actually way better than i expected! I actually sat at the pro table for part of the comp, with Harris Chan, Erik Limeback, and others! Even though I'm still a noob..

My experience was slightly different ;)

It was July 1, 1981 (Dominion Day). My parents and siblings went to the carnival, where the Kinsmen happened to be holding a cube solving championship. We had left our cubes at home (well had a mini 1" 3x3x3, but that doesn't count), so we borrowed cubes from the organizers. They were extremely stiff like they had never been turned before.

Anyhow, about 1 minute into the solve, an edge popped and I couldn't pop it back. One of the directors put it back in and I solved in about 3 mins including the pop, that was only good for 4th.

Lucky for me they had a second competition which was to solve just one side. So I entered and proceded to solve the first layer. Half-way thru I realized only a face was needed, not a layer, so I switched plans and won with a 10s time.

Won a t-shirt :)

My first competition was 'Spanish Championship 2008'. It was my third month with the cube, and I went with an average of 50 sec at home.
I did LBL method, and get an average of 57.90.
I was really nervous. I was a rookie, who didn't know anyone. I met a lot of people, I had a lot of fun, and I enjoyed cubing for first time in competition.

Once you have been in a competition, there's something that makes you wanna go to another one, and another...
Since then, I have been in 9 competitions, and I'm organising the 'Barcelona Rubik's Summer Open 2010' with my friend Alejandro (Who I met in my first competition :) )

Conclusion: If you have the chance to go to a competition; just go. You'll meet people, make friends, and have fun. It's a good experience

Yesterdays Belgian Open:

Cubing-wise it was a complete disaster for me but still I had a very nice day.
Nice people all around, got to practice my languages, got some hint and tips.
It was also cool to see a lots of people I have seen in the forum or on video in real life.
Got to talk to Dan, Joel and Anders for a while. Also a thank you to the friendly cubers whom a shared a table with, you made me feel very welcome.

I found it pretty impressive to see the fast guys and girls solving from up close.

As for my own cubing:
4x4x4
I knew I would go over the time minute so informed the judge beforehand; I would get to do two solves anyway.
2nd solve, underway for some 30s and the judge (another one) stops me because he notices my first one was over the time limit
A little later the first judge sees me back at my table and goes wtf?

3x3x3
Got a pop on first solve, placed edge back in flipped position; That definately did not help for relaxing...
Noticed a cross errror halfway during F2L
On another one I am finishing OLL and I miss one yellow edge??? (in m layer)
Then I mess up an A perm so badly I can practically start all over
I am glad I got one decent solve just around my 50s average :o

2x2x2
Messing up some LL and single bar ortega algoritms but still managed to get one decent (for me) time of 15s

This must have been my worst cubing ever but I will definately visit some more competitions in the future!

Slovenia Open 2010 :P

It was a very nice day. I got to learn a few things, have fun with other cubers, etc. My times were actually OK. I had an 17.89 3x3 avg, 5.7x 2x2 avg and I did OK with other events. It was a first competition in Slovenia, so I got 9 NR :P.

my first comp (belgian open 2010) was just a few days ago.
It was fun, met a lot of very nice people:).
And my results were very good (for me at least)
finished 51st out of 64.
av was 37.62, my pb at home is 34.xx, so I'm pretty happy.
Looking forward to the next one!!

The second judge was me. After you started your solve, I noticed the 6:xx time on the first one (the time limit was 4 minutes or something like that), and went to Lars who told me I should stop you. Sorry for the misundestanding....

I hope you don't feel too bad about this, Ralph. Normally we do a combined round where everyone gets 2 solves anyway, but it was announced as a full average of 5 for everyone but then you have to be able to solve under the time limit.

I would have loved to give you a second attempt but I didn't feel comfortable changing the format of an event in the middle of a round. We were also running behind schedule at the time.

I'm happy to hear that you had a good time. :)
