Did you experience sudden breakthroughs in your cubing?

Some are breakthroughs of understanding, but some are simply faster times - without really understanding why. For me it's feelings of awesomeness and WTF combined.

The brain is a mysterious thing, and I wonder how much we know about this learning process.

I had one a while back: I had a crappy LSE(no tracking or anything, I had crappy lookahead), and so I decided one day that every time I did LSE I would track the UL/UR edges during orientation. I was out of the house, away from a timer for most of the day, and so I Slow solved LSE most of the day, tracking the UL/UR edges. After that day, I could track the L/R edges while turning almost as fast as I could before. At first my times were all over the place, from 21 seconds to 37 seconds. before that day, I averaged around 31-32 seconds. after my times started being consistent again, I started averaging like 25 seconds.
the other breakthrough was when I started liking LSE. After a point, LSE becomes really fun and exhilarating, and it gives you a feeling I havent gotten doing anything else in Speedcubing. kind of like joyriding a ferrari-- you are going wickedly fast, yet you feel perfectly in control.

Yes, this actually happened to me earlier this week. My PB single for 3x3 was like 29 seconds, then I broke it and it went down to 27 seconds. I was really hyped, and literally 2 solves later, I broke it again, this time to 21 seconds. And what's weirder is that they were both Fullstep CFOP solves (no PLL or OLL skips).

I think I have had 2 in my cubing history. The first one was when I was a noob. My pb was just barely sub 60. I did 5 days of slow solving and it helped a ton. I beat my pb around 7 times the day I started speedsolving again. The other one was a few days ago. I was using Petrus for OH and I was getting times around 4 minutes. Then I decided to switch to CFOP and it cut my times in half. Petrus is a bad method; dont use it. I will be practicing OH a lot since I signed up for OH in a competition in 2 months and the cutoff for it is 1:00. I also have to make the cutoff for 4x4 so I will be practicing that too.

how do you know what the cutoff is?

I'm pretty much in the same situation, and I know I should work on lookahead by slow solving. Your post convinced me to finally stop timing and do only slow solving... Man, it's tough, I'm addicted to racing the timer o_O

I dropped about half a minute in 3BLD in a really short time. Went from 1:10ish to 40 seconds. Most of it was probably from learning 3style, because learning it made my execution faster, which made memo faster too.
