[Help Thread] Speedsliding Discussion

At the top level, is 8 puzzle just all about finding the optimal solution, and systematic methods are irrelevant?

Edit: my question was already answered elsewhere. “Yeah, pretty much, at high level you can just see optimal / or +2 / +4 solution for most scrambles without thinking” - dph

I accidentally invented an N-puzzle method (this is not the “advanced 8-puzzle method” that I said I was working on a few weeks ago, I already abandoned that) while I was trying to sleep at 10 PM. Here’s an example of the method used on 8 puzzle:

1. Make the top 3 tiles say “412”
2. Put 7 directly under 4
3. Put 3 directly under 2
4. With the blank square in the bottom right, do D2 L2 U2
5. Trivial last 3 tiles

It might be better for bigger sliding puzzles tho, #freeclock

this is just redux but worse
what method do you use (redux user)

What’s redux? (We’re talking about n-puzzles right)

anyway I use LBL, #freeclock
(If 8-puzzle is the general N-puzzle)
Step 1: Solve 1 in slot 1
Step 2: Solve 3 in slot 2
Step 3: Solve 2 in slot 5 and empty space in slot 3
Step 4: Do the alg " U R' "
Step 5: Solve 7 in slot 4
Step 6: Solve 4 in slot 5 and empty space in slot 7
Step 7: Do the alg " R U' "
Step 8: This puzzle is reduced to a 3-puzzle, which can be done intuitvely

This method reduces the puzzle into smaller version, for example, .....24-Puzzle->15-Puzzle->8-Puzzle->3-Puzzle.

It’s called fringe. I just use LBL cuz it works better for my brain, but if I want to get good at bigger n-puzzles I’ll learn and get used to fringe. (My main n-puzzle event is 8-puzzle)
