Solved the Square-1 Intuitively

I too managed to intuitively solve the SQ1 back in ~2001 , though I did have the advantage of 20 years 'intermediate-level' 3x3 solving to give me some insight. I bought the puzzle secondhand at a car boot sale ( US: flea market ) for 50 pence / 60 US cent in barely-used condition, and put in a lot of hours .. the paper stickers held up better than I was expecting. I think I will still have my notes, I feel the urge to dig them out, now.
But it's not the easiest puzzle to crack, and congratulations to Mrs Brian for persevering, and not giving in to temptation, as clearly today tips and instructions are readily found on the web.

Look, when I was younger, I tried the Square-1 after I purchased it at a Dutch Cube Day. It took me way too long to figure it out, but I got it eventually. At that time, I didn't use a tutorial either, because there were none, and I was pretty confident I could figure it out. All in all, I like the Magic Cube better for its simplicity. Now, back to praising your wife: "It's incredibly hard to solve the Square-1 without tutorials. It requires focus and dedication (2 years is WAY more than "normal" people would like to invest, so that makes you overqualified in this department, i.e., you are talented with dedication). Kudos for your achievement!"

I have an ex-colleague, who tried to solve the Magic Cube without tutorials. She started when she became a mother. After 7 years, she met me, and after being colleagues for about half a year, the Magic Cube came up. She was close, but had trouble with the last layer (who doesn't?). She didn't want any algorithms, though. I promised. Then, I told her two sentences and she knew enough. She solved the Cube within a week and told me right away! So, yes, this sometimes happens, that people are VERY dedicated, perhaps because of her work (holistic health-care practitioner), or perhaps it is the unique curiosity that marked her.

But it is very rare that anybody can solve the Magic Cube without turorials, let alone the Square-1, which I rank more difficult than the Magic Cube.
