I average about 23 seconds now and I can't help but think that AUF should not align the solved pieces, and that I should rotate the cube to to the alg. Am I right in this assumption? I have to think I could lose like 2 seconds here.

That depends so much on style, experience and preference that no single answer applies to everyone.

I guess optimally you would
a) recognise all PLL's from every angle
b) perform the PLL from that angle (requiring "4" times as many PLL's) while predicting the needed AUF
c) perform the needed AUF

Knowing how to do b from 2 angles (so you only need a U or U' AUF before the PLL, and only need to do that AUF 50% of the times) would also be nice

When I learn these situations I learn them from 2 angles so I can either have it facing me or facing away from me. That way I'm either setup to do it, or one quarter turn away from ready.

I was also wondering this. Sometimes I just do the PLL alg, then AUF to finish the cube, but some PLLs like the G perms, I have to line up the 2x1x1 block first before doing the alg.

For me, learning the algs from different directions just wouldn't help, it would take me too long, all for the sake of a U2.

I started doing it with edge cycles because I liked the feeling of doing most of the cube with right hand dominant moves then just being able to fly to the end with a fast lefty move. It is all personal preference though. It is kinda ridiculous to try to cram more in your head when an easy solution is just flicking the U layer around.

most of the time i execute the PLL right away when I find it, and think hard about what AUF I need to do at the end while I execute.

Yeah, I expiremented with this further, and I find that aligning the solved peices helps with recognition, and leaves out that very last AUF at the end, so I can just slam down on the timer. The only PLL's that I do with it misaligned is the R perms some of the time. But like the E perm, is friggin impossible to do without AUF before. I hate the E perm.....=]

I always AUF rather than rotate the cube before PLL and I only align with solved pieces for U perms, which is a habit I want to get out of. After the PLL, I just AUF again, if necessary. It's not that hard to see what way you will need to AUF to within the last couple moves of most PLL's.
