Should I learn FMC?

FMC is not something that you learn. As the name says Fewest Moves Challenge, its objective is to solve the cube with the fewest moves, you can do it with any method you want and thats where the fun is, when you try to optimize your solutions you start learning more about the cube, you can do "weird" things you would not normally use for a speedsolve etc.
Of course, if you want to be competitive you should learn how to block build, orient edges and maybe methods like Domino Reduction.
But to answer your question, you shold definitely try FMC.

I have a strong feeling sitting down for one hour at a time isn't something you will be looking forward to.
Funny that. I never look forward to sitting down for a full hour to do FMC, and yet when I start I can't stop.

I'm nowhere near good enough to get optimal solutions; the thought that my solution (often 28-34 moves) isn't as good as it can be is what drives me to continue.

without offense, most of your posts are less than 10 words(less than 5 words, actually), so I have a strong feeling sitting down for one hour at a time isn't something you will be looking forward to.
Actually, this might be the exact reason for doing FMC: my hyperactive older brother could only learn how to concentrate by playing chess!
