[Unofficial] Shotaro "Macky" Makisumi Solves Rubik's Cube While Juggling

The main difficulty with 3 in one hand while solving in the other would be how you would look at the cube. You have to look up a lot with 3 in one hand so you'd have to hold the cube up above your head to see it and you would only be able to look away from the juggling for a fraction of a second. I wish I was any good at one hand solving or I would give it a go. I'm sure it's doable. I believe that Ronald Graham was one of the first to juggle 2 in one hand while solving.
For the record, I find that reverse cascade is easiest for 3 in one hand, followed by cascade and then fountain.

I tried 2 balls in one hand + OH few months ago and results were quite satisfying, average around 25. I'm pretty sure I can do much faster now, as my OH average dropped to 14.69 yesterday :D. For me it just takes 7 looks at a cube during whole solve, one for each step, sometimes even less. Still working on my 3 balls in one hand juggling, but adding OH in left hand seems extremaly hard for me atm.

Yeah, inverse cascasde is a lot easier. Doing 3 balls in one hand pinball while doing a oh solve would look pretty badass though.

I wish I were even remotely as good as you at juggling, but at least I enjoy it.

I'm not so sure that I'm a better juggler than you: your records for 5, 6, and 7 balls and 4 clubs are all better than mine, for example. But I think the really impressive jugglers around here, besides http://makisumi.com/juggling/, are http://www.jugglingdb.com/records/member.php?user=2533 and, well, http://www.jugglingdb.com/records/member.php?user=63.

solved cube 3 while juggling all of them together
wow. I should try this seriously again then.
Dude, this still is hard as hell. 3 balls seems much more doable.

I first did this some years ago, but I think the key for me was to do moves only with my left (OH) hand, and to use my right (better at juggling) hand instead just to feed the cube as accurately as possible to my left, as well as fixing occasional misalignments.* With some practice, I got my right-hand throws accurate enough to do a move with my left hand more often than not, sometimes by throwing the next ball a bit higher to give myself time for a quick cube rotation.

Earlier today, juggling the cube and two beanbags instead of three cubes, I managed this average on my gen-1 stackmat: 2:02.06, (1:49.03), (2:23.09), 2:01.11, 2:10.09 -> 2:04.42. (On the 1:49, I skipped OLL by inserting the last pair with R B U' B' R'. But I also had a nonlucky 1:50.) I also tried solving a megaminx OH while juggling two balls (and not juggling the minx), and I got 7:27.60. As I recall, I've done the same thing a couple of times with a 5x5 instead of a minx, and I got similar times.

Three balls is still definitely out of my reach for the time being--I just can't juggle three in one accurately enough to look down occasionally, or solidly enough to reliably last as long as it takes me to solve a cube OH. I'll probably manage a cube and a ball in one hand before that, and possibly even a cube and three balls in two hands.

By the way, can we make some sort of notation for this? How about writing the siteswap notation with the numbers corresponding to cubes underlined? So then solving a cube while juggling two balls would be 42, three balls would be 62, solving three cubes while juggling all of them would be 3, and the proposals I just made above would be 4040 and 4444.

* But I tried switching roles yesterday, feeding with my bad juggling hand and turning with my bad OH hand, and after a couple failed attempts I managed a solve.

Cool, thanks for the tip.

I would prefer something easier to type and copy/paste, but I support the idea.

I hadn't seen this. Sweet video, thanks. I think you have the best chance of any of us to do 3 in one hand.

I was feeling left out, so here's my jugglingdb profile. My name is too long. I think I've done 200 catches on 5 clubs double spin at one point, but 176 was the highest I could get yesterday.

Impressive. I'll practice.

Yeah, but that's all I can do very well. I'm a boring juggler - all I do very well is boring numbers. Beyond that, I can only do very simple three ball tricks and a very small number of five ball tricks. And I should point out that our difference in 7 balls is practically nonexistent. (And I haven't done more than about 30 catches of 7 in the past few years.)

Yeah, I completely agree with you on all of them - all three of them are really amazing jugglers.

I was feeling left out, so here's my jugglingdb profile. My name is too long. I think I've done 200 catches on 5 clubs single spin at one point, but 176 was the highest I could get yesterday.
Yay - Macky's on IJDb now!

Thanks, but hopefully you realize that I'm not Aoki and that I can't do oh nor 3 ball in one hand pinball worth of sheet.

But on IJDb you entered it in double spins, so what is it? It's pretty nice even in doubles.

Yeah, sorry, I mean double spins. I haven't practiced singles at all, much less the half I've seen you do. I think I confused them because I'd just seen that you did double spin back crosses, while I do singles.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I just did three balls. I still haven't tried cube + ball in one hand (4040 under my earlier notation... or shall we say 4*040 or {4}040?) in a while, so that might still be less difficult for me. This one took a couple hours of work. For the first half-hour or so, I was dropping around the end of the cross on almost every solve, but the occasional progress motivated me.

Man, I need to make some videos.
