"Relax a bit" discussion

I once entered #rubik. They were not talking about cubing. I left.
Chat on hi-games.net is always very nice and cube related. People usually answer questions when they are not busy solving computer cubes.

blah blah blah

[Rant redacted by moderator: Chill, we'll deal with him]

..this is what I'm talking about. Not beginners asking questions. While sure, I guess I'm glad that debate is being discussed now, and real happy to see several people actively trying to take part in being part of the solution (whether I believe it will work or not), my rant was about the onslaught of people around here just being little punks for no real reason at all. And with no one trying to stop them, why wouldn't they?

The problem is that people post to say that they don't like the new members' posting habits, rather than just silently disliking them.

Really, I think the rule of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" applies here. When a newbie makes a new topic the replies should be helpful links to the FAQ/wiki (or perhaps short personalized explanations, if their situation is a bit different from the usual), not explanations of how they did everything wrong. You're free to have a problem with their spelling, grammar, and lack of proper search-fu, but the topic becomes even worse when you articulate that. Ignore the newbies if you don't have anything better to say. You don't need the extra post count and it just makes the forum look less friendly.

This really applies to everything here... you might be annoyed by a member's posting habits, or off-topicness, or whatever. Feel free to rant to a friend, or notify a mod, or go do something else for a while, or whatever you want, but don't tell them that unless you think it's absolutely and completely necessary. Posting just to criticize a mistake that everything makes means you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Agreed on the rudeness. Sure newcomers annoy me with their "I need tips" threads but I still help them. I only give lectures on cases of extreme ignorance, like the threads where people quintuple post and type in all caps, or use the thread like an IM window and expect instant response. I've made quite a habit of referring people to the one question one answer thread =]. That's my favorite solution.
