im learning my Pll's and i have 12 down so far and the only one i am having a lil trouble recognizing is the E perm because i look for corners first usually if i dont see the perm immediately. anyone else had similar problems?

E perm is the only PLL with no blocks AND no headlights (someone care to explain this? I don't really know how :p), you should be able to recognize an E perm instantly from any direction.

First align the edges. I'm not assuming anything, but just in case you don't already know, aligning any one edge would automatically align the rest. It's kinda trivial.

If your E perm swaps UFR/UFL and UBR/UBL, rotate the cube such that the RFU and LFU stickers are F-colored. Just lookout for either one, if one matches the F color, the other one has to too.

If your E perm swaps URF/URB and ULF/ULB, rotate the cube such that the RFU and LFU stickers are NOT F-colored, duh.

For me, it's almost a process of elimination--if you can't tell what it is, it's probably an E-Perm.

I can recognize E, but I had quite a problem orienting it to figure out how to solve it. For the longest time I had to line up the edges with the centers in order to recognize which orientation it was.

Recently I started looking for the sides with faces of the same color on the cubies. There is be two opposite sides with three of the same color stickers on the (though they're on three different faces) and the two other opposite sides won't. This allows me to AUF and execute the PLL without needing to line up the centers. That probably only makes sense if you're looking at a cube in an E perm.

ive been doing alot of solves to try and get an E perm and then i just got one and i was like "ugh which perm is it??? oh wait YES!" haha

i always like to align as many center pieces as possible when i do pll. when i see that all four center pieces are aligned and none of the corner pieces are, then i know its an E Perm

No blocks.

There are two PLL's with no blocks: H and E. It's easy to tell if it's an H or an E after you see that there aren't any blocks.

You forgot Z. :/

The way I recognize it is basically process of elimination in this order:

1) No blocks
2) 2 corner stickers on the same face don't share the same color
Then I just see if the UFR corner shares a color with the UR edge, if it doesn't, I do a U turn. Then I see how the edges align with the faces the moment before I execute the E perm, so I know if I have to do U, U', U2, or nothing at the end.

exactly right. I hate recognizing E perms... and even once you find out that you are screwed, you still have to AUF the edges, and THEN see which way to apply the alg. Its a pain in the butt
