Real Name as Field in Profile?

But WHY?? You can already put that information in like 10 different places.

If it's an easy thing to put in and it's optional, I can't understand what the problem is. Those who want to put it down will, and those that don't won't.

Duplicate information is duplicate.

Also, have you even bothered to look at the information you can put in your profile? Did you notice the "biography" part? No offence to the OP, but this thread is just stupid.

So your calling him stupid for suggesting something that you don't particularly agree with? Why the do you care so much? Its not the like the addition of this field affects anyone negatively. And many people like the idea. So why not add it?

I do not understand why this is causing such a concern for some people. How is this worth fighting over?

The thread isn't stupid, he brought up a point a number of other people obviously had thought about. I couldn't care less whether there's a name field, but there is absolutely no harm in having it and certainly none in suggesting it.

I would rather not start an argument. I would prefer if a mod could just delete this thread entirely.

You did not start an arguement, don't worry about it. Dene acted as if it was something terrible (not your fault). I don't know how on earth it would effect him or anyone else negatively unless it was hard to create. You brought up something that was a very good point. Erik's post was a very good reason to start what you are talking aboutand I completely agree with what he said.

this is a great idea. I'm sick of people coming up to me at competitions saying oh hi I'm speedster345 from speedsolving.

+1

I agree. I also personally had no idea who some of the more prominent cubers were on here because of only being able to see usernames.

Let's see:

Erik's post was a very good reason to start what you are talking about

If it's only shown on the profile pages, I doubt it would solve Erik's problem because people would still only be known by their fake names. If it's shown next to each post, it clutters the information there more than it already is, possibly makes the box and thus the post longer and at that point it does affect us negatively.

What's your solution that I'm missing?

Btw, I'm completely in favor of this if the real name would get shown next to each post *instead of* the fake name.

So you mean instead of showing your username as "StefanPochmann", it would show "Stefan Pochmann"? :p

I'm also in favor of this, I wouldn't mind getting rid of my username and showing my real name next to my posts.

The only reason I'm arguing is because so many people seem in favour of it, despite it being clear that there was absolutely no need. When asked for a reason, no one supplied a sufficient one.

As for Stefan's suggestion that a real name has to be used instead of a fake screenname (well this wasn't quite what he said, but is essentially what his suggestion implies), the big problem is that people do not want to use their real name.
Like I implied in my first post, if people want to know your name they will find it out. If you have chosen a fake screenname then put your name in your biography if you want people to find out.

I am against Stefan's suggestion, just because of privacy. If you want to show your name, you should have chosen it as your screenname. If you now regret that, make a new account.

The second time I was meeting William (IamWeb), I asked Justin what his user name was, he didn't hear me, because he was intensely solving the 4x4, but he did say "Parity". He was of course referring to his solve, but when William walked in I said "Oh, hey, you Parity from the forums right?" In other words... +1 on the optional name section.

There already is an optional name section. It's called your username. If you don't want to broadcast it that directly, you can always add it to your bio. Or link to your Facebook, where your real name is listed.

We have separate fields for WCA profile, IM, YouTube, etc. because they are links to external sites and it's convenient to link people that way. Your name is just your name. You can put it anywhere, and adding a separate field for it seems unnecessary.
