Real Name as Field in Profile?

I am against Stefan's suggestion, just because of privacy.
I didn't suggest to require people to fill that field.

But if it isn't compulsory, then it wouldn't be any different to what it is now.

So then having an optional Youtube field isn't any different than not having it?
Or Facebook? Or any of the other optional fields?

It would mainly be for people who don't want everyone to call them their username IRL.

This begs the question "why did you make a username in the first place instead of putting your real name?"

By putting in a fake username when you do not wish to be called by that username, you are digging your own problem deeper and deeper.

If you don't want to be called by a username, DON'T HAVE ONE. Have it be your real name. Then everyone will know you by that, and call you that.

Voila, problem solved.

Well, ok, maybe i made a mistake when i named myself Meisen. But be that as it may, i still would appreciate the option to have Bjørn-Erlend Meistad shown somewhere when i make a post. I can't for the life of me understand why you people are making such a fuss about it? If you don't like it, then do not put your name in there..... If you do like it, fill it out. Easy, simple, no need to argue.

Another thing is if it's for some reason hard to implement. Then don't. No biggie.

Displaying "Member" ,or "Premium Member" ,or whatever, under the forum name is wasting space, and could be indicated better with some special icons. Then the line right under the forum name, and above the avatar, could be used for an "A.K.A. = Name" of the users choice.

And what will happen is CubeDude829 will have "A.K.A. = The awesome Petrus solver" under theirs.....

That may be, but it will give others the chance to let people know their real names. I for one think this is a good idea. I haven't had the chance to go to a comp yet and because of this, don't have a WCA profile. And when I first made the profile I wasn't as confident that I could trust this forum or not. Now that I know that for the most part, everyone here is trustworthy, I would like my name to be there.

Do you have no problem with people still calling you MonkeyDude? That was your username and if you don't wanna be called that isn't this hypocritical?
You may be cool with people still calling you that but I'm guessing since you change your name you prefer to be called "Chris" or "Chris Bird".

Now you can change your displayed name to your real name without creating a new account or paying? How?

I don't see what's so bad about creating a new account.
I certainly do not see the point in making an option to switch between fake screenname and real name.
Either the rule can be lifted on screenname changes (a one-off opportunity to get your screenname changed to your real name), or people can be allowed to do it themselves (one chance only).
The problems I have with the option you propose is that it would require extra work for someone (PJK) to add it to the options, and that people would basically have the freedom to switch between fake screenname and real name, which would confuse the likes of daniel0731ex even more. If it was made such that people could not freely interchange between fake screenname and real name, but could only change to real name and stick with it, then it is exactly the same as changing screenname (which, as noted above, is currently banned). No need for anything new to be added to the forum options.

Why don't we take all the information (like Posts & join date), & put it in one mouse-over spot. So it would just say something like person information, & you could see their join date, post count, WCA profile, location, real name, etc. This would get rid of the cluttering, although I realize it might take lots of work.

I got tired of sites like yahoo or youtube saying "Sorry, username 'Robert_Johnson' is already taken". So I created one I could easily remember and I tried to use that same username on all sites as I become a member. When I created my ID at Speedsolving.com I had no idea my true name would be difficult to extract, and now it is a bit late to drop my account just to add a more accurate username.

When I bump into cubers, I introduce myself as "rjohnson_8ball from speedsolving.com", believing most people would not care enough to dig deep enough to discover my true name.

For the longest time I had no idea who this guy "masterofthebass" was. I had to poke a few buttons to eventually figure it out, and I was quite surprised. I still forget who a bunch of people are here, when I see their usernames.

I too would like to see a check box to permit the display of the true name in a person's profile and/or post.
