i have a maru 4x4 and a ghost hand 3x3. ive been using them for a few months, and i have never lubed them (the ghost hand i got from someone else so he may have lubed it before). when i open them up, the pieces are covered in white plastic dust. if i clean away this dust will it make my cube smoother? and if i want to lube it, should i clean up the dust first?

yes, its called cube dust, it makes the cube slower
and silicone spray or lubix, NOT vaseline

put the cube (not the core) in the dishwasher, dry it, then spray it with lube and leave it for 20-30 minutes before reassembling it

There's mixed reviews on cleaning cubes. Myself and many others usually don't clean cubes very often. When you clean them too well, it's sometimes tends to not be as smooth as prior to cleaning it. I'd say get some lube in those cubes and see how you like it before cleaning it.

remember you don't wash the core. Anyway it will make your cube worse. You better use something like CRC heavy duty silicone spray.
What is your cube anyway?

anyway, wipe everything off with some toilet paper, then lube it.
for the 3x3:
either use silicone spray on every piece but the core and let it dry for half an hour. wipe every piece again with toilet paper, just in case you used too much of the spray. then reassemble. if it's not feeling nice, repeat the procedure.
or
reassemble it first and then lube it with silicone oil.

for bigger cubes:
clean it, reassemble it, get some lube in it, let it rest for a day.
