So I was on the train with friends and some guy gets on, (He was totally high) but he says he could solve a Rubik's cube if we had one. Everyone looks at me and I pull out my 3x3. He solves it in like 1:30. I take it, and solve it in 40. (This is actually a pretty good time for me.) felt so accomplished. He was pretty embarrassed.

Anyone else have a fun experience like that?

One time I was at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, and I saw a street performer on a pogo stick, solving a Rubik's cube. He kinda gripped the pogo stick with his legs and did a ~2 minute solve with a basic method. Now, at the time, I averaged about 20, and I was no stranger to a pogo stick when I was younger. I figured I could pogo one-handed and still bust out an OH solve in under a minute. I wanted to call him out and kick his ass, but alas, my dad wouldn't let me.

I was in my spanish class, and one of my friends was solving it in over a minute and everyone was like standing around him amazed. I had my weilong with me so I went over to them and did like an 18 second solve. It was kind've mean but funny.

I never really think it's fun to embarrass someone else who solves the cube. I think it's awesome and rare to ever encounter anyone who can solve the cube. I think it would really suck if I was solving in my 20-25 second range and dazzling people and Feliks or Mats came out of nowhere and snatched the cube out of my hand and solved it in 7 seconds to steal my thunder.

On the rare occasions I do meet someone who can solve the cube, I think it's really fun to sit down with them and share techniques rather than try to show off my semi-decent abilities.

Solving a cube in 10 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute or 5 minutes is still quite a feat that most people in the world will never accomplish. Let's encourage those slower than us and be inspired by those faster!

Really this. I would ever go out of my way to purposely embarrass a stranger, unless they were being a complete ***. Even then I probably wouldn't try to embarrass them, just shut them up.

I can't find the video but does anyone remember the one where a barely sub min solver bumps into pogobat and they have a race? The random person won. Can anyone honestly say they wouldn't crush him in a public race if they got the chance?

Other than that I agree with DeeDubb.

I wasn't even thinking about being rude... He was being really cocky and rude to my friends so I felt proud but now I feel awful.

You shouldn't feel awful at all... I know at first it's really tough to find confidence, especially when you only talk to people who solve incredibly fast. If he was being rude, it was probably good that you showed him up, and it probably gave you a lot of confidence in your ability, which is nice. Just remember, solving in 40 seconds is fast compared to the vast majority of the people in the world, so you don't need to show up strangers to feel proud of yourself. You've already done great, and you'll only get better!

That would be very interesting...

An interesting story is that my school had a "field day" (basically a day of games), and they asked for people who can solve a 3x3 the fastest. I happened to ditch it because it was just too loud, and people got frustrated that a person who solved it in 90 seconds got the point for that event. My point is, I would've impressed everyone if I were there and solved it in 15 seconds.

I've never had an experience like this with a solve, but I used to have fun with a certain situation that would go something like this:

(Back when the 3x3 single world record was not yet sub-10 seconds)

*Me cubing in public*
Person: Hey you solve that really fast! But my cousin/nephew/niece/friend can solve a cube in like 10 seconds every time! *Joke about how I should practice more*
Me: Wow! That's really fast! Your cousin/nephew/niece/friend should totally attend a competition because the official world record is (sup-10 second time) and it sounds like s/he would definitely beat that!

In retrospect the people saying stuff like this were probably just joking, and maybe my response was a little snarky/sarcastic, but I've never really liked the "my cousin's sister's former roomate's ex's neighbor can totally solve a cube one-handed in like 3 seconds!" comments.

Idiots that say this sort of thing deserve nothing more than sarcasm and demeaning.

I had one at school, there was someone in a different class and he was performing to some other kids and a teacher and they were all amazed (he did it in 1minute 30 seconds), then, one of my friends who knew I could cube said I could do it and I got a 17 second solve and I was so embarrassed.
