Hi Folks!
I just registered and it seems that this is the spot to say hi.
I don't know for sure, but I'm probably one of the older people who still enjoy solving and collecting cubes as much as I do. I'm 46 and remember collecting cubes back in middle school.
My best time ever (very unofficial) was 38 seconds. I know that's glacial compared to the speedsters these days, but no one I knew at the time could beat it.
I got away from it for years but in the last couple I have collected a few cubes again and have even added a few of the variants to my collection. The Tower and a 5x5x5. I seem to really struggle for some reason with the Tower... not sure why it stumps me so badly... But I will get it!
The 5x5x5 I have just started to learn. I worked painfully slowly through a solution, which I spent a total of about 15 hours (over a couple days) to finally solve it. So I'll be working to learn and improve that one too.
The oddest and most difficult variant I had was a Sudoku style 3x3 cube. All sides were orange, there were just numbers on each cube face and it was intended to solve in side according to the Sudoku notion. I never did solve that one. Partly because it was a very cheap style and basically just fell apart.
The algorithms that I use are the old and basic ones. The next step is getting some practice and exposure to finger tricks and some of the more advanced methods.
I work in Operations, in the Oilsands in Northern Alberta. It's darn cold these days, but the sun usually shines a lot in the winter here. And that's the main thing!
Take care everyone.
