[Help Thread] OH - Which Hand?

From what I have heard, most people prefer the not dominant hand because it is supposedly easier to train for non natural actions, but I am right dominant and use my right hand, but my OH ranking is my worst one, so I can't really talk

It doesn't really matter. You choose one of your hands and will get used to it after a short time.
I think using the non-dominant hand for OH is an inherent advantage because you're used to hold the cube with that particular hand for 2H. For algs it doesn't really matter either, you can mirror known algs at a pinch if you insist to keep using your right hand.

Basically the only advantage of using your left hand is that most alga are crafted for right handers and it's easier to do R, U heavy algs with you left hand in OH. That said, you can just mirror the algs and get the same effect.

It's certainly a short-term advantage, but in the long run, it's your weaker hand. Doing OH with my LH feels unnatural now after practising with RH.

I do agree with your last point though, mirroring algorithms is incredibly easy. There's no reason for all the LH resources to affect your choice. It's not like choosing a method.

I can actually read LH algorithms perfectly normally now when I'm doing OH. My hand mirrors the notation completely by muscle memory.

Don't you think that by training 2H and OH they can mutually benefit from each other, thus, using the same hand to hold the cube in OH and 2H could also be an advantage long-term?
Don't get me wrong, your point can make sense and in general my opinion is that whatever we train is what we're getting used to with only minor impact regarding dominant hand and such.

Hello,

I currently use my right(dominant) hand for OH. Is it better to use your left hand? Easier to execute algs?

Thanks for any info.
It is easier to use your left hand because theres more algs out there for left handed but cubing world has plls for people who use the right hand!

But in what way would they mutually benefit each other? The turning style is completely different. Lookahead I could agree on, though the z rotations in ZZ/CFOP would make the skills less transferable, and everything would be mirrored in Roux. So it would definitely help, but I still feel like the benefits of using your stronger hand outweigh the disadvantages...

I use my dominant right hand.
I think the big advantage of using the nondominat hand is, that the hand gets stronger and "better".
My bottleneck in 2H solving is, that my left hand is wayyy slower than my right hand (sexy move tps: 14 and 8). If I would use my left hand for OH, it would probably be at least as good as my right hand or even faster. Simon Kalhofer (Petroleum in the forum) once said, that his left hand is faster now because of that.

In 2H solving most people have a dominant hand that does the majority of turning while the other is there just for holding the cube. For most people this hand is the right hand and because of that they're better at RU than LU. The way you turn OH means that left handed solving gives the same move set as right dominant 2H.
I'm Right dominant in solving (generally I'm a lefty) and leftOH is much more natural, righthanded OH feels really weird and I'm always a z-rotation off what i "should" be.

I'm a righty and I use my left hand for OH. I guess I chose left because it was the what the majority did at the time.
I don't regret my decision though, I think the left hand is better if you're right hand is dominant
but it's personal preference. :)
Whichever hand you use will get used to it with a bit of practice

idk man i write better with my right hand, and its not a matter of practice
you are asking whats better right? well if you are right handed left hand is probebly easier bc your right hand is bussy writting but considering cfop is totally simetric main hand probebly better
man i love trying to discredit others' opinions

I'm right handed, and I mirror algs when I'm doing 2H (although I'm not doing that as much as I did). OH I started with right hand because it seemed like it would be the more coordinated hand, but switched to left because I can actually make turns without dropping the cube.

I'm right-hand dominant. I chose the left hand for OH in the beginning because it felt more natural. Okay, also because it seemed like everyone did it and at that time I couldn't mirror algs or learn new ones fast. But I have never had any problem using my left hand, it felt even easier.
Also for writing I think it's just a matter of practice. We learn to write with our right hand, so never experience how it feels lefty. We would be able to write as well with our left hand if we started out with it (probably).

That thing about writing may be true to an extent but there defiantly is hand-dominance. Small kids usually prefer to do stuff with one hand over the other and they haven't been "indoctrinated" to have this preference so there is something (genetical?) that gives us this preference.
