Now, we all know what a Nobel Peace Prize is. Obama won it recently, he also wins a 70 million lottery (http://www.freep.com/article/20091011/BLOG36/91011003/1318/) . Now the purpose of this thread is to. (Writing prompt, got stuck in my head because of school)

- state your opinions, and feelings
- ask questions
- give answers, etc.
- talk about other people winning Nobel Prizes (not just peace)

I personally am happy for him, but I'm worried about this thread being a controversial topic.

Then why did you make it?

I still wonder what Obama has done to get the Nobel Prize.
They say he did a lot (of course, in about half a year . . .) for worldwide communication and understanding between different nations.
I think there are 100 people who should get the price instead of him, there are people fighting for children in poor countries or organisations fighting against the war.
Obama is the president and does, what a president usually does - he talks. I think one of the main reasons he got this price is, that Bush didn't do to many good things. Obama tries to change these mistakes know (which is obviously really good!), but that's more or less the normal case.

Finally I think the Jury just followed the general "Obama-hype". I really appreciate the things he does, but he's a politican, not a pop-star(as he's often seen), so I think its wrong that people all over the world cheer to him as soon as he says "Hi!" . . . . .

+1 Obama hasn't done much, and most of what he has done, I don't agree with. I don't get it.

+1 again. People see his face like they see it on that infamous hope poster and they support him for change without really knowing what this change is.

The rationale behind giving Obama the Peace Prize is to "encourage" him to really follow through on what he has said he will do. I think the bigger issue here is people valuing the Nobel Prize so highly. The Nobel Peace Prize committee is made up of 5 people!
To quote the Associated Press: "The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee — four of whom spoke to The Associated Press, said awarding Obama the peace prize could be seen as an early vote of confidence intended to build global support for the policies of his young administration."
Regardless of what you think about Obama, the Nobel Committee does whatever it likes and there have been much bigger Nobel controversies in the past.

I agree completely.
It is said he received this award for reducing the number of Nuclear missiles in the world. But im pretty sure thats his job and should not be given a treat every time he does something he is supposed to

In that case, lets stop honoring those who have served in the military. Also, policeman and firemen obviously don't deserve recognition for their heroics, it's their job!

ok then...lets give Every single fireman, police officer, and everyone in the military the Nobel Peace Prize!
This award has now become a Joke

you obviously are for Obama and are taking this way to personally.
Judging by your response im guessing you dont know why people dont want him to get this award because you hear what you want to hear instead of both sides.

My opinion of Obama is irrelevant. I perfectly understand the opposition to Obama getting the prize and almost wholeheartedly agree. All I am pointing out is that:
1) The Nobel Peace Prize is overvalued
2) In this case, the prize is being used as a motivator (read my first post)
3) Suggesting that people shouldn't be rewarded for their actions is ridiculous
I will refrain from responding to your misguided personal attack.

lmao
1) yes the prize is overvalued
2) It is def not being used as a Motivator
3)im suggesting people should not be rewarded for actions they KNEW THEY HAD TO DO WHEN THEY TOOK THE JOB! Other wise we would be giving awards to a pizza delivery guy for getting the pizza to a house on time.

1)I'm glad we agree
2)The Peace Prize Committee disagrees (again, see my first post)
3)Obama doesn't have to lower the amount of nukes in the world(for example, it could be anything he has said he will do) and comparing pizza delivery to various important global issues is a stretch, but otherwise I agree

The really stupid thing about him winning the award is that the nominations for the prize ended like a week after he became president. That means he must have been nominated for the prize before he had really even done anything worthy of getting it.

well even in the first week he put America on the path to start following international laws like habius corpus again. it's a big deal to me. I like obama a lot, but c'mon...

on the other hand obama could use the money. when adjusted for inflation presidential salary is at an all time low of 400k a year so he coudl really use that 1.4 million dollars.

I sure hope that you guys aren't saying that this is Obama's fault lol. Why is everyone defending or attacking what Obama has done? I myself am an Obama supporter. I feel that him receiving the prize was a bit unorthodox. However why are people blaming him? Why should he have to take the blame for it? He didn't nominate himself. He was nominated by the committee. It has nothing to do with what he said or did. If you want to be angry or upset with someone then be angry with the committee. Not Obama.
