Hello speedcubers
So, my questions...
-Should I stick with Petrus? I see most people use Fridrich, what are the advantages of it?
Yes, in the long run since you've never used Petrus you could get as fast as any Fridrich user. People usually think it's slow 'cause they always use Fridrich and try out Petrus once and decide it's slow.
-When should I learn the algorithms for solving the last layer in 1 or 2 looks?
Whenever you feel ready.
-How long will I have to practice before I can solve it in like 30 seconds?
Depends on how much work you're willing to put into it, and how focused you will be on it.
-I used a $1 cube which locks up on every other turn and is impossible to turn with one finger until I could do 4 minute solves, now I bought a rubiks brand cube (not DIY) which is much better. Is a DIY cube necessary if I want to get good? Also, should I lube my cube? I'm afraid of doing something wrong and messing up my cube :S
Not really, I have one and it's amazing but it's really not necessary.
-How fast should I be before I start learning fingertricks? Right now I'm doing really clumsy moves, using my whole hand for turning.
You should start learning fingertricks as soon as possible. It's not really that hard and is much faster. I learned fingertricks not even a week after I learned how to solve the cube. It's not hard to learn and dramatically helps your times.
-Is it normal to have to pause for like 10 seconds to look for pieces after each step? Is there some special technique to learn, or is this a matter of practice?
Practice, and yes it's normal, I still do that sometimes.
-Are people gonna think I'm a nerd if I cube in public?
Yes but who cares? Nerds make all the money!
No but really, they probably won't unless you are trying to show off. I would solve it all the time and it always attracts a crowd, the kids on my bus are still amazed by it. This kid almost got beat up when the bully saw me solve it and forgot about the victim.
