Ok so I just timed myself solving the cube for the first time, iv known how to for three years or so, just never felt the need to go fast. Anyway I did and using a rubis brand cube my best was 48.4, and my average of ten was 1:06.91. I tried to do an average of twelve but the timer I found only does ten. I'm using the begginers method from the pamphlet that came with the cube, with a few tweaks I came up with, I want to learn the faster methods, but I don't know where to start. Iv heard all the anachronisms like pll and oll, but I ave no idea what they mean, or how to go about learning the. Also I think I'm going to buy a zanchi to get faster, but I'm not sure if that's the best cube. One last question; does any one know a goo timer for the iPhone?

Ps. I do collect cubes; iv got a rubiks 3x3, mini Dian Sheng 3x3, a Dayan megaminx, rubiks 4x4, rubiks 5x5, 7x7, 6x6, keychain cube, mini east sheen 2x2, and a c4u cubic 3x3x7

Thanks!

Timer: Use qqtimer to time hundreds of solves and not just 10

Method: There are 4 main methods that people like to use. They are Petrus, ZZ, CFOP, and Roux. You can be sub-15 with any of them, but basically no one is sub-10 with Petrus and only a few are sub-10 with ZZ. I recommend looking into all of them and choosing the one you like best.

Cube: Get a Dayan cube. A Zhanchi or a Guhong is really good.

Phone timer: Chaotimer

These are hilarious, but please, do be more careful with typing.

Buy a better cube than your Rubik's as soon as possible; you can get a ZhanChi or GuHong or LingYun or PanShi or whatever, all the cubes people talk about are fine and will not be limiting your times until you are well under 15 seconds.

A good place to learn a advanced method is badmephisto - he has tutorials all the way from a beginner's method similar than yours to full Fridrich. There are also other good methods such as ZZ and Roux, but Fridrich definitely has the most and best tutorials. If you want to know about any speedcubing terms, the first place you should check is the speedsolving wiki. For instance, here's the PLL page: http://www.speedsolving.com/wiki/index.php/PLL

RRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUXXXXX!!!!!!!!

if you want.

The most common methods are CFOP, Roux and ZZ so try all of them if you want to. Zhanchi is considered one of the best cubes. there is no best cube though because its personal preference.

I use iiTimer. It's a good iPhone app.

No no no! Don't get a DaYan or GuHong yet, get something simpler, a v cube, something a little slower, so you can get used to a speedcube.

Bad advice. A Dayan cube can be tightened to be controllable without resorting to buying clunky and annoying cubes. That way you get something that is both slow enough and feels good. You seem to be presenting an expensive and time-consuming solution to something solvable with a screwdriver.

^+1
I switched from a rubik's brand to a stickerless zhanchi and got used to it probably within a few hours. And yes, screwdrivers.

You don't have to get a dayan. Just get a cube that you like.

This is correct. Slow cubes affect your look ahead badly.

Personally, I found cubing a lot of fun when I discovered how nice recent speed cubes are.

If the cube is too fast / loose, another way of "improving" it is to over-lube it.

LOL !

but actually:

your wrong. you should just get whatever cube you want, whenever you feel like getting a new cube.

I'm glad most people seem to agree that upgrading to a better cube doesn't need to be done in stages, or only at XX.XX times. I started speedcubing with my brother's zhanchi and lingyun, then purchased my own. I see no negative effects from starting with a cube that was "too fast". My turning isn't inaccurate, and on the plus side, I'm already used to the same type cube that I'll probably use for years. It really is much more enjoyable using a nice turning cube.
