Hey Dave!
I am also sorta getting back to cubing after taking, (probably the number of your years cut in half and turned into months), a small break. From where you are I'd say the best thing is to update your beginners method, so to speak, if you haven't already. This simply means that you should be working on finding quicker ways to get pieces where they need to go faster and should be able to see what you need to do and move to the next step faster.
Ex. Work on your top cross, be able to get it in under 15/10 seconds
Also be able to put corners in the first layer without using an algorithm (Intuitively)
I didn't learn any other methods of solving the cube until I was in the 40s with beginners method... I'd say, once you get an average under a minute, than it's time to move on.
The next step I recommend is learning f2l (first two layers). At first your times will get worse and you'll feel like you're back tracking, but trust me, f2l is sooooo much faster than beginners method.
What F2l is, is a first layer corner and a second layer edge piece being placed in together. So for example, you solve your first top cross, than flip it and solve for the corners of the (now) bottom layer and with those you insert your middle layer edges.
ALSO! XD I recommend buying something faster than a Rubik's cube if you haven't already... haha... In other words, a different brand of 3x3x3... some recommendations: Dayan Zhanchi, YJ Sulong, Dayan Guhong.
Hope this helps! xD:tu
