Hey everyone. My name is Dave and I am just getting back into cubing again after putting it down for many years. I am most likely older than most here turing 44 in 2 weeks. I learned the beginner method in the 1980's when the cube first came out and thats the method I still know and I can solve the 3x3 in about 90 seconds. I have set a goal to get faster and get down to 30 seconds. I want to start learning other methods and I am open to suggestions.

Hey Dave!

I am also sorta getting back to cubing after taking, (probably the number of your years cut in half and turned into months), a small break. From where you are I'd say the best thing is to update your beginners method, so to speak, if you haven't already. This simply means that you should be working on finding quicker ways to get pieces where they need to go faster and should be able to see what you need to do and move to the next step faster.

Ex. Work on your top cross, be able to get it in under 15/10 seconds
Also be able to put corners in the first layer without using an algorithm (Intuitively)

I didn't learn any other methods of solving the cube until I was in the 40s with beginners method... I'd say, once you get an average under a minute, than it's time to move on.

The next step I recommend is learning f2l (first two layers). At first your times will get worse and you'll feel like you're back tracking, but trust me, f2l is sooooo much faster than beginners method.

What F2l is, is a first layer corner and a second layer edge piece being placed in together. So for example, you solve your first top cross, than flip it and solve for the corners of the (now) bottom layer and with those you insert your middle layer edges.

ALSO! XD I recommend buying something faster than a Rubik's cube if you haven't already... haha... In other words, a different brand of 3x3x3... some recommendations: Dayan Zhanchi, YJ Sulong, Dayan Guhong.

Hope this helps! xD:tu

Welcome! There are plenty of *older* cubers around here so you won't be alone! Most common methods right now are CFOP aka Fridrich, Roux, and ZZ. CFOP shouldn't be too hard for you to learn if you know beginner's method.

Hey Dave. I am only a couple of years younger than you, and like you I first solved the cube in the 80s with BM and then stopped playing with it till now. I have recently started using CFOP and have got my times from about 2 minutes to about 1 minute in the last few weeks. My single PB time is 53 seconds, but I'm slowly improving.

There are a few different methods you could use, but CFOP seems to be the one most go with. I have heard good things about Roux as well though.

Good luck anyway.

I just watched a series of videos on solving using Roux by Lubix cube and I think I might go with this method next. My new cubes that I ordered will be here tomorrow. I am glad to see some cubers my age.
