I heard from Mitchell that the new 2006/07(?) Rubik's Cube edition sold in stores are pretty good; the stickers aren't pilling off, and the mechanism seems to be better. I'm planning to buy some, although I have a feeling they're still sold out (or still have the old 25th version). What do you guys think?

See if you can open the box and try them out. They're still not perfect - about half the cubes start out unbalanced, and it's a pain to break those in.

I think I might be able to help with this.

You see, a friend of mine's family recently got a couple of cubes. I was only able to play with one, but it was amazing. It was smooth, yet loose. None of the pieces were "wobbly," and it worked very nicely. None of her family are speedcubers, let alone even know how to solve it. So, it's safe to assume that it came out of the package like that.
Compared to my 25th anniversary cubes, the stickers are different. To me, they seemed a bit smaller and rounder. The orange isn't as bright. But, they seemed much more durable.

Of course, this is just one experience. I saw that a couple of my friends also got these newer cubes. They were tight. But, once again, the stickers were nice. They were durable. My other friend had his cube for a while now, and the stickers are still in good shape.
So, maybe they improved it, but it's still a chance of whether you get a good one or not.
