The diy (a) cubes i bought are pretty smooth when assembled. But they still lock up at times and affect my times. Are there any ways to prevent this? How do i know, which is the right tension? Could it be due to the springs having a higher spring constant(harder to squeeze)..Should i try buying new springs and replace the old ones? Or is it normal for the cubes to lock up sometimes when the cube is new? When you pull the centre piece, how lose should the screw be? I just want to get rid of the lock ups.. Thanks in advance..

if i was you i would lube it, if you havent done already, after that use it quite a lot, and after a lot of solves it will become loser and loser, then you adjust the tension to your liking. This is what happened in my case, and i just lubed it and used it for ages, now its perfect.

I used to put the screws crooked in the core, wich made the cube all bumpy and it broke after a few solves, but maybe I am just crooked.... I think that you just use it for a while and clean it offcourse, it will get smoother after a while :)

the tention of the spring is different from cube to cube because it depents how loose or tight you wont to have it. i like to have it loose so i can cut corners better. if you have to loose you might get a lot of pops and thats i not really what you looking for. lock up for me is when a corner cubie gets in the way of the centerpice. is that what you wont to avoid? if so then you have to execute the algs more clean. dont cut the corners to soon dont force it try to do one alg in one smooth motion. i get lock ups usely in my f2ls because i try to win some time.

I think the difference between (a) and (b) is that (a)'s screws are longer, correct me if I'm wrong. I have a (c) and an (a) and the (a) is better, but the (c) is also a very very good cube. And yes, Rama, is right, putting screws straight into the core is very, very important.
