Hi all

When Rubik's Cube came out in 1980, I was 13 years old. I didn't get one until the cheaper knock-offs came out, as the Rubik's Cube was too expensive, in my mother's opinion. My little brother and I were very excited, we scrambled it and then of course had no idea how to solve it. I can't remember where we got it, but somewhere along the way we acquired a little paperback book that tried to explain how to solve the thing. The only pattern I was ever able to manage was the one where you get a different coloured dot in the middle and the rest of the side is all the same colour. My little brother discovered you could pop the thing apart with a screwdriver and put it back together solved. Well, the cube didn't survive many disassemblies before it was useless, and by then I'd lost interest and had moved on to navy blue eyeliner and pink hair.

Yesterday I was attempting to play a little game that involves patterns, and failing, and remembered the challenges of the Rubik's Cube. One thing led to another and I ended up on You Tube watching a tutorial for the white daisy/cross. I decided I needed a cube to try along with the tutorial and quickly found out that a Rubik's Cube is not considered much good. Long story short, a Valk 3 is on the way to me (because the Moyu Weilong GTS V2 was sold out in black) and I've joined here for moral support.

My goal is not to be a speed cuber, just a cuber. I'd like to be able to solve the thing in under 5 minutes.

Welcome to the forums. it is great to have you hear and i hope that you enjoy your time here.
By the way, Great introduction. : )

LOL :)

Cool cool, I'm sure you can achieve that goal and overcome it. If you haven't started already, learning Layer By Layer will be the way to go. I'm not sure if you can solve the cube or not, but "Noah Richardson" has a very good tutorial on youtube and I'm sure if you ask any questions on here, you will get help. Welcome to Speedsolving Forums!

Ah, welcome. Nice to have you here! My story is similar. I did get my own cube at around the same time and age. I played with it and put it away for a few decades(!). I picked it up again a couple of years ago and re-learned how to solve it using a variation of Ortega's corners-first method. (Which btw works amazingly well on my 2x2x2!) After a bit of practicing with an original Rubik's cube, I leveled out at around 50 seconds. My new-year resolution was to get sub-30 before the end of the year (and hopefully faster which is not that easy when you are 50+ years old and horrible at memorizing algs). Long story short, I got a couple of new cubes, switched to the Roux method and am about 25% through memorizing the !*@*& CMLLs! I am again at 50 seconds and improving. I guess I'll drop by the older-cubers thread but you guys scare me with your BLD sub-5 minutes 4x4x4 discussions! LOL

Very similar story, just turned 50 myself. Welcome!

You'll find all levels and it's a completely inclusive atmosphere. Not everyone is out to get really fast or learn blindfold, everyone has their own goals for what they want to get out of it. We all understand the rush of getting a personal best, the feeling is the same regardless of the numbers.

Welcome @Solanum Same story here. Tried and failed aged 9. First solve aged 41 and I've been hooked for 4 years.
As suggested, you and @TomasH should drop by the Older Cubers Discussion. We're a friendly and helpful bunch. Blind solving does seem to be a major theme there recently. We may try to convert to its joys and frustrations.

You inspired me to join the forums and start my own welcome thread. I was excited to see another "old" lady like me.
