Hey guys! I am new to cubing (only about a month in) and I have a couple of questions... well to get started I kinda wanted to know if I am making fast, slow, or just average progress... My PB right now is 29.43 and my best average out of 5 is somewhere around 46.... I solve using F2l, only 2 different OLL algorithms (for top cross and alignment of top cross), and everything else is beginners... So how am I?... also.. Should I move on to Fridrich (like I want to) and how should I learn Oll and Pll. I also solve the 2x2 and 4x4 using basic stuff. My 2x2 best is 8.63 and my 4x4 best is 6:01.60 (though I haven't memorized 4 parodies yet)... and to end it... I would love to begin to enter in competitions but need to find a place. I live in Upstate SC so if your starting one or you know one near please tell me.

I am going to try for a world record within the next two years.... The most Rubik's cubes solved while running a marathon... the current record is 126 I believe... but I think I can shatter that...lol... wonder if there is records for a 5k and half-marathon ...hmmmmm

Hey there! Welcome into cubing :) I've started 3 months ago so we're both news :)

First, sub30 in one month is impressing...really impressing! How many hours do you practice a day?? :) So yes, it's pretty good progress (I became sub30 this morning so...xD)
Second, what method are you using? However, you should try Fridrich, I think that this method is pretty good and pretty fast (it's my opinion) but every cuber is different :)
Third, you must learn OLL and PLL! There's 78 algorithms but if you try to memorize one per day, in three months you should be able to apply them and lower your times ;)

So if you need more tips or you have questions, I'm here! Sorry for my bad english :P
Chow! :)

Don't try to learn all the OLL and PLL algorithms. Learn 4 look last layer (there should be plenty of tutorials on youtube) and practice your cross in the bottom (if you don't do this already). But mostly just practice, you don't really need to worry about learning any algorithms right now (exept four look last layer).
By the way, what cube do you use? Just wondering.
Hope this helps :)

Yeah start with 4Look, then learn them all :)
That's what I've done and what I'm doing :)

excellent! that's very good for a beginner, especially if you've only been doing it a month. you must practice it a lot. i've been cubing on and off for 4 years, not very serious before but getting pretty serious recently. my pb is 23.86 for the 3x3 and average is about 36-38. i am working on learning my 1-looks and i have about a third of the olls down. as for your questions, yes, learn all the algorithms, but don't rush it, make sure you got them. as a rule of thumb, i do two per day (really just one and it's mirror). You only need 2 4x4 parodies to solve and obviously there are others but they're not necessary, like the 57 oll algs. also, just as good advice, make sure you have good cubes if you want to do any competitions. shengshou's are very good for 4x4 and up, but don't get a 3x3 shengshou bcuz it locks and pops a LOT. plus, if you try for that world record, just run slow while solving and you'll have more time. don't forget lube!

Thanks for the replies!!! By the way I practice everyday at school, going to the mall, at home, before XC practice, in the car.... my friends keep calling me addicted :D lol... And I recently got a Dayan Zhanchi stickerless... (I plan on getting a stickered one for competitions) I do have the shengshou 3x3... and it certainly get stuck a lot! I have two sheets right now with 7 Oll and about 21 Pll algorithms... but I'll check out your site Thomas. Also Jonah, The record is only 126 cubes and I figured I can do somewhere around 200... I will not be running very fast anyhow...because Its a marathon! :D lol... But thanks for the advice! I need to buy some lube but I don't know the differences and what I should get... So, What lube should I get?
